RtI Paraprofessional - Math & Reading (Intermediate)

Duties

Position Summary

The Reading & Math Intervention Paraprofessional provides targeted Tier II and Tier III reading and mathematics interventions to students in grades 4–8 under the direction of certified teachers and intervention staff. This position works with individual students and small groups to deliver research-based interventions, reinforce foundational academic skills, monitor student progress, and help students achieve academic success. The Reading & Math Intervention Paraprofessional plays an important role in supporting the district's system of supports by fostering a positive, structured, and supportive learning environment where students can build confidence and close academic skill gaps.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide Tier II and Tier III reading and mathematics interventions to individual students and small groups under the direction of certified teachers and intervention staff.
  • Deliver research-based reading and mathematics intervention programs with fidelity according to district instructional protocols.
  • Reinforce foundational reading skills including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and written language as assigned.
  • Reinforce foundational mathematics skills including number sense, computation, mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and math fact fluency as assigned.
  • Support implementation of individualized intervention plans designed to accelerate student learning and close academic achievement gaps.
  • Assist students in developing organizational skills, study habits, problem-solving strategies, and independent learning skills.
  • Implement accommodations and supports for students with IEPs, 504 Plans, and intervention plans as directed by certified staff.
  • Monitor student engagement and performance during intervention sessions and communicate observations to intervention staff.
  • Assist certified staff with collecting intervention progress-monitoring data and maintaining accurate records of student participation.
  • Support benchmark screening, diagnostic assessments, and progress-monitoring activities as directed by intervention staff.
  • Utilize positive behavior supports and trauma-informed practices to promote student engagement and success.
  • Encourage student perseverance, confidence, resilience, and a growth mindset while supporting academic achievement.
  • Build positive, supportive relationships with students while maintaining high expectations for learning and behavior.
  • Assist with preparing instructional materials, intervention resources, and student learning activities.
  • Maintain a structured, organized, and distraction-free intervention environment that promotes student engagement and academic success.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and information in accordance with FERPA.
  • Communicate regularly with classroom teachers, intervention staff, special education staff, and administration regarding student needs and progress.
  • Participate in professional development and district training as applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned by administration.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Skills

  • Must hold a valid Illinois Paraprofessional (PARA) or Short-Term PARA license.
  • Experience working with children and/or in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Experience providing Tier II and Tier III academic interventions, tutoring, or instructional support in reading and/or mathematics is preferred.
  • Ability to implement research-based reading and mathematics intervention programs with fidelity under the direction of certified staff.
  • Must have a positive attitude and positive approach to meeting the needs of all students.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Ability to follow and implement instructional plans developed by certified teachers and intervention staff.
  • Demonstrate strong classroom management using consistent expectations, positive behavior supports, and professional judgment.
  • Ability to work effectively with students of varying academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be punctual and reliable.
  • Demonstrates consistent attendance, reliability, and professionalism.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Salary/Benefits

Compensation & Schedule

  • Position Type: Anticipated part-time (approximately 29 hours per week).
  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday during the regular school year.
  • Contract Days: Approximately 176 student attendance days per school year.
  • Compensation is based on district salary guidelines and qualifications.
  • Benefits: This position is anticipated to be part-time and may not include insurance benefits. Final hours, compensation, and benefits may vary based on district needs and the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and actively supervise students for extended periods.
  • Ability to move between classrooms and instructional settings throughout the school day.
  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and classroom supplies as needed.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to behavioral, medical, or safety situations.
