Reading Specialist

Duties

Position Summary

The Reading Specialist at Marian Catholic High School will support students in developing strong literacy skills by providing targeted reading instruction, intervention, and assessment. This role collaborates with teachers, administrators, and families to identify reading challenges, implement evidence-based strategies, and promote academic success for all learners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess students’ reading abilities using formal and informal assessment tools.
  • Develop and implement individualized reading intervention plans for students who require additional support.
  • Provide small-group and one-on-one instruction in phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate effective literacy strategies.
  • Monitor student progress and maintain accurate records of interventions and outcomes.
  • Support the implementation of school-wide literacy programs and initiatives.
  • Conduct professional development sessions for teachers on literacy instruction and intervention strategies.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and recommendations.
  • Participate in student support meetings and curriculum planning activities.
  • Stay current with research and best practices in literacy education and intervention.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Literacy, Reading, or a related field required.
  • Master’s degree in Reading or Literacy Education preferred.
  • Valid teaching certification/licensure required.
  • Reading Specialist endorsement or certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of classroom teaching or literacy intervention experience.
  • Strong knowledge of reading development, dyslexia interventions, and evidence-based literacy practices.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with MTSS/RTI frameworks.
  • Familiarity with literacy assessment tools and data analysis.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learning needs.
  • Proficiency with educational technology and literacy software.

Salary/Benefits

Starting base salary no less than $44,100 with opportunity for higher base salary depending on experience, education level, and credentials.
