Physical Education Teacher (Grades 4-8)

Duties

Position Summary

The Intermediate School Physical Education Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-based physical education instruction that promotes physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, healthy decision-making, and lifelong wellness habits for students in grades 4–8. This position supports the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development of students while maintaining a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment. The teacher plays an important role in building positive relationships with students and contributing to a positive school culture through consistent expectations, active supervision, and student engagement.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Embrace and help grow the mission of Pleasant Valley which is to “engage, inspire, and empower each student towards academic excellence and citizenship”.
  • Deliver standards-aligned physical education instruction for students in grades 4–8.
  • Promote physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, cooperation, goal setting, and healthy lifestyle habits.
  • Plan and implement engaging lessons and activities that meet the needs of diverse learners and varying ability levels.
  • Differentiate instruction and activities to support students with IEPs, 504 plans, medical needs, and varying physical abilities.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, structured, inclusive, and positive learning environment.
  • Teach, model, and reinforce appropriate behavior, teamwork, and respect during all activities.
  • Use positive behavior supports, restorative practices, and trauma-informed strategies to support student success and self-regulation.
  • Ensure the safety of students at all times during physical education classes, fitness activities, locker room supervision, and other assigned duties.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment, instructional spaces, and activity areas to promote safety and organization.
  • Observe, assess, and evaluate student participation, progress, and performance.
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, administration, and staff regarding student progress and concerns as needed.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, intervention staff, and administration to support student success.
  • Supervise students in gymnasiums, locker rooms, hallways, cafeteria, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other school settings as assigned.
  • Assist with school-wide activities, assemblies, field days, wellness initiatives, and extracurricular events as needed.
  • Participate in professional development, school improvement efforts, and district initiatives as applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned by administration.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Skills

  • Must hold a valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with appropriate Physical Education endorsement.
  • Must have a positive attitude and positive approach to meeting the needs of all students.
  • Demonstrate strong classroom and activity management using consistent expectations, positive behavior supports, and professional judgment.
  • Ability to organize, supervise, and safely manage large groups of students in active settings.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, initiative, and strong communication skills.
  • Organized and able to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with students of varying academic, physical, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
  • Demonstrates consistent attendance, reliability, and professionalism.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, run, and actively supervise students for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to demonstrate physical activities and safely use physical education equipment.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment as needed.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to behavioral, medical, or safety situations.

Salary/Benefits

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Schedule: Determined by years of experience and total graduate semester hours. A teacher can increase their salary by moving down the salary schedule with more experience, by moving horizontally towards the advanced degree columns, or by doing both.

Additional Notes

Athletic Director Opportunity

An additional stipend may be available for candidates interested in also serving as the District Athletic Director. Duties associated with the Athletic Director role may include scheduling contests, coordinating officials and transportation, communicating with coaches and families, overseeing athletic compliance and eligibility requirements, and supporting the overall operation of the district athletic program.
