Special Education Teacher - Early Childhood

Duties

Deliver Targeted Small-Group Instruction

  • Provide daily instruction in:
    • early literacy (phonics, decoding, comprehension)
    • foundational math skills
  • Differentiate based on:
    • IEP goals
    • skill level (not grade level)
  • Adjust pacing, materials, and expectations as needed
  • Adapt lessons from:
    • Amplify CKLA
    • Big Ideas Math
  • Pre-teach and re-teach key concepts
  • Ensure students with IEPs can access core instruction

Co-Teach Within the Cohort

  • Work across:
    • multiple classrooms
    • shared common space
  • Lead rotations during literacy and math blocks
  • Support all students—not just those with IEPs

Develop & Implement IEPs

  • Write and maintain compliant IEPs
  • Align goals with daily instruction
  • Ensure accommodations/modifications are consistently used

Progress Monitoring

  • Collect and analyze data regularly
  • Adjust instruction based on student progress
  • Communicate growth to team and families

Support Students with Autism, ED, and Intensive Needs

  • Implement:
    • behavior intervention plans (BIPs)
    • sensory supports
    • communication systems

Facilitate Regulation & Transitions

  • Use the special education classroom as a:
    • regulation space
    • instructional support area
  • Proactively support students before escalation
  • Teach self-regulation strategies

Maintain Structured Support Systems

  • Develop and use:
    • visual schedules
    • transition systems
    • consistent routines
  • Support staff in implementing these systems

Co-Plan with Teachers (Weekly)

  • Align:
    • instruction
    • groupings
    • supports
  • Problem-solve student needs as a team

Communicate with Families

  • Provide updates on:
    • progress
    • goals
    • supports
  • Maintain positive, solution-focused communication

Qualifications

Education & Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education (or related field)
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with:
    • LBS1 (Learning Behavior Specialist I) endorsement

Salary/Benefits

Salary

  • Commensurate with experience and determined by the district's collective bargaining agreement
  • Current range $40,000-$60,000

  • 12 sick days and 5 personal days annually

Additional Notes

This position is part of a collaborative, multi-age inclusion model serving 1st and 2nd grade students. The successful candidate will work closely with general education teachers and support staff to provide instruction and support across classrooms. The role includes supporting students with a range of needs, including autism, behavioral, and cognitive disabilities.
