Counselor - Middle

Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Strive to implement the district's philosophy of educational and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Develop a comprehensive plan of support for social emotional needs within the school.
  • Provide academic advisement to students.
  • Assist with student scheduling.
  • Intervene with students experiencing a social-emotional crisis in an effort to diffuse and calm the situation.
  • Provide one-on-one, small group, and whole class interventions/instruction to support academic and social emotional learning needs.
  • Coordinate a referral system for students, parents, and teachers.
  • Serve on the school's RTI team as directed by the building administrator.
  • Assist with the development of RTI and 504 plans.
  • Assist teachers with developing classroom-based plans based on the understanding and needs of individual students.
  • Develop a comprehensive list of internal and external social emotional learning resources for teachers and families.
  • Take a leadership role in maintaining respectful relationships amongst students within the school.
  • Participate in identifying and resolving problems between school and community
  • Act as a liaison between families, school, and community agencies.
  • Monitor data and conduct needs assessments to determine social emotional needs and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive list of community agencies and services for students, parents, and teachers.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-services at specified times

 
 
 
Additional Functions:

  • Assist school personnel in recognizing unmet needs of students by providing consultation and/or in-service experiences to school personnel, parents and students.
  • Assist in developing resources to resolve problems and interface these with school and community needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in School Counseling or related field.
  • Illinois Professional Educator License with School Counselor endorsement required

Working conditions

  • Mental Demands:  calculating, comparing, evaluation, interpreting, organizing, consulting, analyzing, planning, documenting, specifying, coordinating, implementing, and presenting.

 

  • Physical Demands:  bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting for prolonged periods of time, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity, ability to read and write, ability to speak and understand the English language.  Must be able to lift an individual student.

 

  • Environmental Conditions:  The work is performed primarily indoors; however, outside work is required on occasion.  Travel between school facilities may be required.
