Art Therapist/School Counslor

Duties

SUMMARY: The Art Therapist/School Counselor provides direct and indirect counseling and therapeutic services to students with disabilities whose social, emotional, and behavioral needs interfere with their ability to access the educational environment. This position serves as a related service provider within the Perandoe Educational Program and utilizes both counseling and art-based therapeutic interventions to support student success. RESPONSIBILITIES: Communicate and collaborate effectively with others. Ensure confidentiality of sensitive information. Maintain a record of dependability, evidenced by consistent attendance, punctuality, and attention to detail. Understand and adapt to a variety of situations. Maintain and exhibit general and personal safety practices. Work independently and exercise good judgment. Assume personal responsibility for professional performance and growth. Utilize effective problem-solving processes. Read, understand, and follow verbal and written directions. Utilize applicable technology to support performance responsibilities. SPECIFIC: Serve as a related service provider for students with IEPs. Provide individual and small-group counseling and therapeutic services aligned with students' IEPs. Utilize art-based therapeutic strategies to support emotional regulation, communication, and behavioral needs. Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals related to social-emotional and behavioral functioning. Participate in IEP meetings, re-evaluations, annual reviews, and progress monitoring. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and collaborative problem-solving discussions. Collect and maintain data on student progress toward IEP goals. Ensure services and documentation are compliant with IDEA and Illinois special education requirements. Collaborate with teachers, paraprofessionals, school psychologists, and related service providers to support student needs. Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of behavior intervention plans (BIPs). Provide strategies and consultation to staff to support student behavior and emotional regulation. Assist in creating a structured, supportive, and trauma-informed learning environment. Assist in crisis prevention, intervention, and de-escalation to support student safety and regulation. Support students in developing coping skills, problem-solving skills, and social skills. Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and needs. Coordinate services with outside agencies and mental health providers as appropriate. Provide in-service training and resources to staff as needed. Participate in activities that support the effective operation of the district and the program. Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including service logs and progress reports. Adhere to ethical standards and confidentiality requirements consistent with professional practice and the Illinois School Code. All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The Art Therapist / School Counselor will hold a current and valid Professional Educator License (PEL) with a School Counselor endorsement and a Master’s Degree in School Counseling, Art Therapy, or a related field. Art Therapy credentials (ATR or ATR-BC) and/or Illinois clinical licensure (LCPC, LCSW) are preferred.
