Counselor - Elementary

Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Develop a comprehensive list of internal and external SEL resources for teachers and families.

  • Develop a coherent plan of support for SEL needs within the school.  This plan should be integrated into the RtI process and communicated to all stakeholders.

  • Continually seek feedback regarding the counseling services provided.

  • Take a leadership role in maintaining respectful relationships amongst students within the school.

  • Conduct regular needs assessments from various stakeholder groups for SEL needs.

  • Use needs assessments to help students and teachers develop plans.

  • Provide leadership in the implementation of Second Step curriculum, including providing ongoing professional development for staff.

  • Monitor SEL data within the school environment and use the data to identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Provide 1-on-1, small group, and whole class interventions/instruction to support academic and social emotional learning needs.

  • Serve as the case manager for RtI Team referrals involving behavior.
  • Create a structured referral system for students, parents, and teachers.
  • Intervene with students whenever there is a social-emotional crisis for students in the office in an effort to diffuse and calm the situation.
  • Case Manager for 504 cases and assist with the development of RTI and 504 plans.
  • Work closely with the principal to coordinate and plan SEL support programming and scheduling.  Work to build the program from the ground level.
  • Align SEL services to Continuous Improvement.
  • Act as a liaison between families, school, and community agencies
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive list of community agencies and services for students, parents, and teachers
  • Attend staff meetings and in-services at specified times

Additional Functions:

  • Assist school personnel in recognizing unmet needs of students by providing consultation and/or in-service experiences to school personnel, parents and students.
  • Assist in developing resources to resolve problems and interface these with school and community needs.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in School Counseling or related field.
  • Illinois Professional Educator License with School Counselor endorsement required

  • Mental Demands: calculating, comparing, evaluation, interpreting, organizing, consulting, analyzing, planning, documenting, specifying, coordinating, implementing, and presenting.

  • Physical Demands:  bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting for prolonged periods of time, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity, ability to read and write, ability to speak and understand the English language. Must be able to lift an individual student.

  • Environmental Conditions: The work is performed primarily indoors; however, outside work is required on occasion.  Travel between school facilities may be required.
