Assistant Director of Curriculum and Instruction - Specialized Student Services

Function / Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Specialized Student Services Curriculum and Instruction provides strategic leadership to strengthen instructional quality, instructional coherence, and student achievement for students with disabilities, including multilingual learners. This role oversees the supervision and evaluation of specialized staff, leads standards-based curriculum development, supports data-driven instructional practices, and coordinates professional learning to ensure high-quality, inclusive instruction. The Assistant Director partners with Teaching and Learning, building leaders, and stakeholder groups to align special education programming with the District's Strategic Plan and Department goals. 

Job Duties / Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a program of formal and informal staff appraisals to assist staff in reaching their professional goals and to increase the quality of their work.
  • Participate in IEP/Special Education meetings to ensure that each student is provided and receives an appropriate Individualized Education Plan which best meets the identified student needs.
  • Support the appropriate special education services to students by assuring the evaluative and diagnostic services and placements meet the identified student needs.
  • Support inclusion of special education students into general education by working in tandem with general education and Multilingual and Multicultural Education (MME) programs.
  • Support proper implementation of special education programs including identification, ordering and disbursing of classroom materials and classroom set ups.
  • Coordinate, manage, supervise, and lead development and appraisal of ELL Special Education staff.
  • Support the analysis of student achievement data to develop curriculum, instruction, and assessment systems that will enhance student learning.
  • Collaborate with Teaching and Learning to continue the development and implementation of standards based curriculum and lead this work for Specialized Student Services
  • Evaluate, identify and lead implementation for Specialized Student Services curriculum and supplemental materials needed for students with disabilities.
  • Uphold continuous improvement strategies to provide systems of support to ELL Special Education Staff.
  • Coordinate and provide department professional learning, including summer professional learning and New Teacher Orientation.
  • Create coherence of Specialized Student Services programs to the District's Strategic Plan and Department goals.
  • Conduct, in cooperation with building administrators, staff, parents, and community, ongoing evaluation of curriculum and instruction, programs, services, and coordinate the long-term planning process to meet the needs of students.
  • Monitoring of 70/30 compliance and complete of State Deviations forms.
  • Liaison between Specialized Student Services and Teaching and Learning, Professional Learning, Assessment and Accountability, and Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department (MMED) to align student academic resources.
  • Lead and participate in various committees support district-wide and program initiatives to engage all stakeholders in the program (i.e. MTSS, Instructional Council, Professional Development, etc).
  • Coordinate District and State Assessments (i.e. DLM and Alternate ACCESS) on behalf of Specialized Student Services for students with disabilities.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Education

  • PERA module designations required (Teacher & Principal)
  • Professional Educator License with General Administrator or Principal endorsement
  • LBS1 Certification
  • At least five (5) years of special education teaching experience and supervisory experience
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English (written/verbal) preferred. 

Experience / Knowledge

  • Knowledge about theories of learning, literacy, curriculum, and assessment and identification procedures (psychological and educational).
  • Effective communication skills, well-organized, strong time-management skills, problem solver, and reflective.
  • Familiar with student information systems and electronic IEP systems.
  • PERA module designations required (Teacher & Principal).
  • Professional Educator License with General Administrator or Principal endorsement.
  • Professional educator license in the field of Special Education with at least five (5) years of teaching experience and supervisory experience.
  • Bilingual Endorsement or ESL endorsement preferred.
  • Fluent in Spanish preferred – Reading, Writing and Spoken Language.

Salary/Benefits

The salary range for this position is $100,716.00 - $151,055.00.  Our typical practice is to hire in between the minimum and midpoint $125,888.00.
