Duties

Director of Operations 

The Director of Operations is a senior administrative leader responsible for the planning, direction, and management of the district's operational functions to ensure safe, efficient, and fiscally responsible support of teaching and learning. Reporting to the Superintendent, the Director oversees school finance, transportation, food service, facilities, and district-wide safety. This role requires strong leadership, regulatory knowledge, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

CLASSIFICATION: Certified

FLSA CLASS: Exempt 

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

EVALUATION: Evaluated by the superintendent. Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education's policy on the Evaluation of Professional Personnel, developed pursuant to State law.

School Finance (CSBO)

  • Serve as the district’s chief financial operations leader in collaboration with the Superintendent
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the annual operating and capital budgets; ensure fiscal integrity and transparency
  • Oversee accounting, payroll, purchasing, and internal controls consistent with Illinois School Code and ISBE requirements
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the Superintendent and Board of Education, including budget status, projections, and long-range financial planning
  • Lead levy preparation, audit coordination, grant fiscal compliance, and financial forecasting
  • Ensure compliance with GASB standards, state and federal reporting, and audit requirements

Transportation

  • Plan, supervise, and evaluate student transportation services to ensure safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance
  • Oversee routing, scheduling, fleet management, maintenance, and driver staffing
  • Administer transportation contracts and/or in-house operations; manage RFP processes as needed
  • Ensure compliance with Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and ISBE transportation regulations
  • Address parent and community concerns related to transportation in a timely and professional manner

Food Service

  • Oversee the district’s food service program to ensure compliance with USDA, ISBE, and Illinois Department of Public Health regulations
  • Ensure fiscal sustainability of the food service program, including budgeting, meal pricing, and participation analysis
  • Supervise food service vendors or in-house operations, including contract management and performance monitoring
  • Promote nutrition education, student participation, and equitable access to meal programs

Safety and Risk Management

  • Lead district-wide safety, security, and emergency preparedness initiatives
  • Coordinate crisis response planning, drills, and training in collaboration with administrators and local first responders
  • Oversee risk management, insurance programs, claims, and loss prevention strategies
  • Ensure compliance with life-safety, environmental, and workplace safety regulations

Facility Management

 

  • Oversee the financial management of Building and Grounds
  • Oversee capital improvement projects in consultation with the Director of Buildings and Grounds

 

  • Ensure all procedures are followed with bidding, RFPs, RFIs, and all vendor contracts
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance plans, capital improvement schedules, and long-range facilities plans

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the district administrative team and participate in strategic planning
  • Support collective bargaining processes as related to operations departments
  • Prepare reports, recommendations, and presentations for the Board of Education
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent

Qualifications

  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with Chief School Business Official (CSBO) Endorsement required
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in School Business Management, Public/School Administration, Finance, or related field preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in school district operations, school business management, or a related public-sector leadership role
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Illinois School Code, ISBE rules, collective bargaining agreements, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Proven experience in budget development, facilities management, transportation, and safety planning
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership skills

Salary/Benefits

 Full-Time, 12-month administrative

Salary and benefits commensurate with education and experience, in alignment with district administrative guidelines and Board of Education policy. 

Salary range: $120,000-$140,000
