Assistant Principal

Duties

Purpose

The assistant principal, in collaboration with the building principal, provides leadership and direction to support the School District 21 Strategic Plan and promote learning for each student.

I. THE CULTURE DOMAIN 

  • Relationships: Builds internal and external relationships by being visible and approachable, and by modeling mutual respect. Promotes a "culture of service" to students and families.
  • Equity: Identifies and dismantles inequitable practices; leads an equitable learning culture where every student has access to high-quality instruction.
  • Wellness: Nurtures a culture of physical and social-emotional wellness; implements social-emotional learning practices for both students and staff.
  • Ethics & Traditions: Embeds an ethical work culture and maintains professional integrity. Values and celebrates the unique traditions and diversity of the school community.
  • Student-Centeredness: Ensures all adult behaviors and school celebrations are anchored in what is best for the individual learner.

II. THE SYSTEMS DOMAIN 

  • Vision/Mission: Facilitates the implementation of a shared vision that drives school identity and academic growth. Ensures the vision is the filter for all school-based decisions.
  • Strategic Management: Leads the development and monitoring of school improvement targets. Manages the "plan-do-study-act" cycle for organizational improvement.
  • Operations & Safety: Establishes and maintains a safe, effective learning environment. Manages student discipline, building supervision, and fiscal resources. 
  • Communication: Utilizes current technologies to ensure transparent and tactful communication with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Managing Change & Innovation: Identifies priorities to build organizational capacity; generates stakeholder acceptance of change in a "human-centered way."

III. THE LEARNING DOMAIN 

  • Instructional Leadership: Ensures alignment between curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Uses student performance data to lead "crucial conversations" with staff.
  • Assessment: Leads the school in using data-informed decision-making to improve student outcomes and close achievement gaps.
  • Professional Learning: Facilitates a culture of ongoing, reflective learning for adults. Protects time for teacher collaboration and Professional Learning Community work.
  • Human Capital Management: Conducts frequent observations and provides timely, growth-oriented feedback via the district teacher appraisal system.
  • Global Mindedness: Promotes a culture that develops students' awareness of their place in a global society.

Qualifications

  • Illinois State Board of Education Professional Educator License with General Administrative Endorsement or Principal Endorsement
  • Preferred Experience: Prior successful experience in teaching, instructional coaching, assistant principal, or central office administration.

Salary/Benefits

Position salary range is $89,000 to $99,000, accompanied by a competitive benefits package.
