Duties

A St. Rose Special Education Teacher (LBS1) is responsible for designing and implementing specialized instruction tailored to students with diverse learning needs, strictly adhering to Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and IDEA regulations. Their primary duties include drafting and managing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), tracking progress toward measurable goals, and collaborating with families and general education staff to ensure students remain in the Least Restrictive Environment. Beyond academics, these educators provide critical behavioral interventions and social-emotional support, often supervising paraprofessionals to maintain a safe, inclusive classroom that fosters student independence and compliance with state mandates.

Qualifications

To qualify as a Special Education Teacher in Illinois, you must hold a Professional Educator License (PEL) with a Learning Behavior Specialist I (LBS1) endorsement, which requires a Bachelor’s degree from an ISBE-approved teacher preparation program. Candidates must pass the ILTS Special Education Content Test (#290) and clear a comprehensive federal and state fingerprint-based background check. Additionally, educators must complete mandated reporter training and, once licensed, maintain their credentials through 120 hours of professional development every five years to ensure they remain current with state standards and inclusive instructional practices.
