Elementary Principal

Duties

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Is the instructional leader of the school who is primarily responsible for the improvement of instruction and the implementation of educational programs of the school within District and State of Illinois guidelines.

 

  • Assists the Director of Curriculum with curriculum and staff development, through both formal and informal activities, establishing clear lines of communication regarding school goals, accomplishments, practices and policies with students, parents and teachers.

 

  • Assists all staff members in maintaining discipline in the school, following the guidelines set in the student handbook, and deals with all forms of student discipline, i.e. classroom, bus, lunch, playground, athletic events, etc. 

 

  • Assumes responsibility for coordinating transportation, student lockers, cafeteria and other support services.

 

  • Assumes responsibility for reporting and monitoring of student attendance and coordinating efforts with the LaSalle County Truant Office when appropriate.

 

  • Coordinates the development and management of schedules of classes and extra curricular activities.

 

  • Assumes responsibility in the preparation of student schedules.

 

  • Consults with faculty, nurse, psychologist, social worker and speech therapist regarding requests for and monitoring of regular and special education services.

 

  • Plans and schedules school assembly programs and other student recognition events.

 

  • Assists with the requisition of supplies, textbooks and equipment, conducts inventories, and maintains records.

 

  • Serves as a representative and administrative liaison with parent, faculty and student groups.

 

  • Maintains a positive education and learning climate.  In so doing, the principal shall be knowledgeable of students, teachers and parents.  He or she shall be sensitive to staff and pupil morale, and problems and concerns of the staff, students and parents.

 

  • Manages the school in an effective and efficient manner.  In this capacity, her or she is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating all facets of school operations.

 

  • Utilizes resource personnel (district and other) to improve the quality of instructional support or administrative services to students and staff.

 

  • Coordinates the delivery of appropriate student services to meet the identified needs of children served by the school.

 

  • Assists with development and implementation of a program for staff development.  He or she shall provide the necessary in-service to maximize the effectiveness of the school program.

 

  • Supervises and evaluates staff members, student teachers and volunteers assigned to the building, including both certificated and support personnel.

 

  • Is accessible to the various school communities (students, parents, staff).

 

  • Promotes programs and activities, which enhance the welfare, health and safety of students and staff.

 

  • Assigns duties to staff members and implements the techniques of participatory management and progressive discipline as appropriate.

 

  • Makes effective decisions after due consideration of all pertinent facts and after a review of possible alternatives.

 

  • Submits recommendations to the Superintendent concerning the appointment, retention, promotion and assignment of all personnel assigned to the school.

 

  • Maintains good relationships with the school related organizations such as the PTA, Scouts, community and civic groups, YMCA, etc.

 

  • Develops and accomplishes personal performance objectives that are established each year.

 

  • Assumes a leadership role in the recommendation of policies, interpretation and execution of same.

 

  • Adheres to deadlines established for district operations.

 

  • Involves himself/herself in professional growth activities.

 

  • Advises the Superintendent regarding decisions related to the school and district.

 

  • Operates within the guidelines of the Illinois School Code, regulations issued by the Illinois State Board of Education, policies adopted by the Board of Education and procedures approved by the Superintendent.

 

  • Utilizes resources of proper law enforcement agencies when the safety and welfare of students and teachers are threatened by illegal use of drugs and alcohol.

 

  • Performs in all instances, with integrity, honoring the confidences and loyalties ascribed to this position.

 

  • Assumes the additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.

 

Qualifications

Must meet Illinois State Board of Education licensure requirements for certified and administrative positions.

At least five years of successful classroom teaching experience and prior administrative experience is required.  Preference will be given to prior experience in a school with a high population of exceptional learners (special education, low income and english language learners).
