Duties
Purpose
The Coordinator of Special Education will assist the Director of Special Education in the administrative, supervisory, and leadership duties necessary to support students, staff, families, and community members within District 21.
Essential Functions
COMPLIANCE WITH LEGAL MANDATES
- Implement and monitor the District’s special education procedures and programs to ensure compliance with Illinois School Code and other laws and regulations related to special education, health services, student discipline, 504s and ESY
- Manage requests and coordinate services for private/parochial schools, homebound instruction, private day placement
- Coordinate the compilation of documentation submitted by student services personnel to ensure accurate student records;
- Assists the Director of Special Education with monitoring Medicaid billing and compliance
- Assists the Director of Special Education with providing training and consistent monitoring and compliance with special education policies, procedures.
- ENSURING EFFECTIVE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING
- Assists in developing continuity of comprehensive District programs and services;
- Observes specific students/classrooms and make recommendations to the Director of Special Education upon request;
- Participates as District representatives at out of district meetings;
- Facilitates communication and documentation regarding transportation requirements for appropriate students as appropriate.
- Evaluates special education personnel in collaboration with building administration, as assigned;
- Serves as LEA for IEP meetings where student program placement may be changed (ensuring appropriate procedures are followed for students transitioning into, within and out of the District programs)
- Administrative contact for all move in special education students; ensuring electronic records transfer, intake IEP meetings are scheduled, and special education services and programming align with IEP);
- Oversees the development, coordinates the implementation, evaluates and revises specialized curriculum used in District’s special education programs;
- Provides consultation to building admin regarding scheduling of related services and special education teachers and teacher assistants;
- Supports Building Administration with short-term crisis planning
- Collaborates with District and building Administrators to monitor and assist teachers and related service personnel to ensure the curriculum is implemented with integrity and fidelity
- Effectively manages procedures and collaborates with the Director of Language Services on the Bilingual evaluation process (including monitoring referrals and assigning staff for the evaluations)
- Collaborates with other District administrators to support assessment practices for IEP students (including DLM and Alternate ACCESS)
- Leads and organizes all aspects of ESY for preschool-8th grade students
- LEADERSHIP/COACHING/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- In coordination with the Directors, plans and coordinates and provides job embedded professional development related to special education;
- Develops special education training and reference materials (staff, student, parent) and revises annually as assigned by the Directors;
- Provides support with the implementation of the District’s MTSS process
- Provides guidance to special education teachers and related service personnel to ensure effective practices are consistently utilized for all students;
- Supports principals, building teams, and individual teachers in the implementation of differentiated curriculum, academic and behavioral interventions.
- Works effectively through difficult situations with teams and parents to ensure the appropriate educational programming for students, attending IEP meetings as assigned ;
- Provides effective, on-going communication with out of district providers (homebound and parochial schools).
- Informs the Building Administrators and Directors regarding teacher and other personnel effectiveness, and program development;
- Performs other duties in all areas as assigned
- EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:
- To assist the Directors in the administrative, supervisory, and consultative duties necessary to support students, staff, families, and community members within District 21.
- Evidence of prior supervisory and leadership experience with a strong commitment to academic excellence with high expectations of students and staff.
- Extensive knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding special education compliance.
Capacity to effectively interpret, organize, prioritize, and communicate information verbally as well as in written form.
- Demonstrate the ability to develop short and long range plans to effectively meet special education program goals and integrate planning efforts between all stakeholders, including those in general and special education.
- Ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
- Knowledge of a broad range of materials, resources, and best practices in special education as well as research-based strategies and interventions to address academic, behavioral, and social emotional concerns.
Salary/Benefits
Salary ranges from $100,000 - $120,000.
