Self Contained Elementary School Special Education Teacher

Duties

  1. Instruct pupils in all academic areas and citizenship as specified in state and federal law, state administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district. As well as goals set forth in Individual Education Plans.  (IEPs)
  2. Set clear and measurable goals for special education students.
  3. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individual, small group instruction, and whole class instruction.   The special education teacher will act as an advocate for special needs by adapting the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, and follows the adopted district curriculum guides.
  4. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  5. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  6. Training in proper restraint techniques is required along with the physical ability to perform the restraint.  
  7. Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports as well as additional special education documentation requirements.
  8. Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil's progress and interpret the school program.
  9. Identifies pupil needs and collaborates and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems and documenting progress toward individual student goals, benchmarks, standardized tests, universal screening and curriculum assessments.
  10. Works toward developing a positive professional relationship with all staff- with students' needs as the primary objective.
  11. Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  12. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  13. Participation cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  14. Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
  15. Supervises pupils in out-of-classsroom activities during assigned working day.
  16. Administers group-standardized tests in accordance with the state and district testing programs.
  17. Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
  18. Participates in faculty committees, Response to Intervention team meetings and the sponsorship of pupil activities.
  19. Demonstrate a commitment to student success by extending the professional's gift of time beyond the school day.
  20. Other duties assigned by the principal or superintendent.

Qualifications

1.   Have Illinois certification in Special Education
2.   Highly Qualified by NCLB Standards if required
3.   Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
4.   Required Physical and TB Test  
5.   Early Grade endorsements preferred
