Certified School Nurse

Duties

Position Summary/Purpose:  The Certified School Nurse supports student health, safety, and access to learning by providing comprehensive nursing services at Mannheim Middle School, with a planned transition to district-level Certified School Nurse responsibilities. The role includes direct care, care coordination, compliance with state and federal health requirements, staff collaboration, and leadership of health services aligned to district practices and Illinois School Code.

 

Role and Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide direct nursing services to students and respond to health needs during the school day
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and district procedures
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and Section 504 health accommodations
  • Collaborate with staff, families, & healthcare providers to support health and access to learning
  • Monitor student immunization compliance, physical exams, and health documentation in accordance with state requirements
  • Participate in IEP and 504 meetings as the health services representative
  • Maintain accurate student health records and required state reporting
  • Support communicable disease prevention, response, and education
  • Provide health education and training to staff as needed
  • Assist with building safety planning and emergency preparedness related to student health
  • Provide leadership and coordination of health services across all district schools
  • Establish and maintain districtwide health procedures aligned with Illinois School Code and public health guidance
  • Support training, supervision, and coordination of building nurses and health staff
  • Monitor district compliance with health requirements, screenings, and reporting
  • Partner with administrators, Student Services, and HR to support medically complex students and staff health-related needs
  • Develop protocols for medication, emergency response, and communicable disease management
  • Coordinate with community health providers and agencies to support student wellness
  • Analyze health data to inform district practices and prevention strategies

 

 

Qualifications

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Professional Educator License (PEL) with School Nurse endorsement (CSN), preferred
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license required; candidates without a CSN must be willing to obtain the CSN PEL within a defined timeframe
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required
  • Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and accurate health records

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Work independently, with individuals and in groups large and small
  • Experience in pediatric, community health, or school nursing preferred
  • Knowledge of Illinois School Code, IDPH, and ISBE requirements related to student health
  • CPR/AED certification
  • As a multi-language district, we always prefer staff who are bilingual (not required for this position)

Salary/Benefits

Starting Salary: Based on Education and Years of Teaching - based on increased negotiated rate higher than last year’s Salary Schedule (Comparable for non-CSN until achieved)

Physical Demands: Ability to respond to medical emergencies and provide physical assistance when needed. Ability to lift and assist students when required for health and safety. walk, bend, twist, squat, stoop, reach above head, reach forward, lift up to 25 pounds, pushing and pulling, visual acuity close/distance/depth perception, hearing to receive information, verbal to exchange information, sitting for prolonged periods of time. Frequent standing, walking, and movement throughout the school environment

 

Environmental Conditions: indoor climate controlled setting (for example school office, health office, hallways, and class rooms).  May include work outdoors for student assistance throughout the school year.  Includes exposure to disease and/or infections.
