Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction

Duties

Strategic Academic Leadership

  • Lead the development and implementation of a coherent K–8 instructional vision aligned with the District’s strategic plan.
  • Ensure curriculum alignment with Illinois Learning Standards and state assessment expectations.
  • Establish measurable academic goals and monitor progress toward student achievement targets.
  • Guide district-wide instructional initiatives to promote equity, rigor and student success.

Curriculum Development & Implementation

  • Oversee development, adoption and evaluation of K–8 curriculum and instructional materials.
  • Ensure vertical and horizontal alignment across grade levels and content areas.
  • Monitor fidelity of curriculum implementation across all schools.
  • Lead textbook adoption cycles and instructional resource review processes.

Assessment & Data Systems

  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive assessment framework (formative, benchmark and summative).
  • Analyze student performance data to identify trends, achievement gaps and improvement strategies.
  • Support principals and teachers in using data to inform instruction and intervention.
  • Ensure compliance with state accountability and reporting requirements.

Professional Learning & Leadership Development

  • Design and oversee district-wide professional development aligned with instructional priorities.
  • Support principals in strengthening instructional leadership practices.
  • Facilitate leadership development initiatives for administrators and teacher leaders.
  • Promote evidence-based instructional strategies and culturally responsive practices.

Student Support & Instructional Programs

  • Provide oversight of MTSS frameworks, intervention programming and enrichment initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Special Education, English Learner and Student Services departments to ensure inclusive and equitable instructional practices.
  • Support early childhood (Pre-K) and elementary instructional continuity within the K–8 model.

Compliance & Grant Oversight

  • Ensure instructional programs comply with Illinois School Code, ISBE requirements and federal regulations.
  • Oversee planning, implementation and monitoring of instructional grants (Title I, Title II, Title III, etc.).
  • Prepare and present instructional reports to the Superintendent of Schools and Board of Education.

Collaboration & Organizational Leadership

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent/Chief School Business Official (CSBO) on instructional budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Work closely with Human Resources on staffing models, recruitment of instructional staff and evaluation systems.
  • Serve as liaison to community partners and academic organizations.
  • Participate in negotiations as needed regarding instructional and academic provisions within collective bargaining agreements.

  • Serves as a key member of the District’s Cabinet/Executive Leadership Team.
  • Attendance at evening Board of Education meetings and community events as required.
  • Provides instructional updates and recommendations to the Board of Education.
  • Travel between district sites as necessary.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction or related field.
    • Doctorate in Education or related field (preferred).
  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with Superintendent or General Administrative Endorsement.
  • Minimum of 7 years of successful experience in education, including building-level leadership.
  • Prior district-level administrative experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading curriculum, instruction and data initiatives.
  • Experience leading multi-building K–8 instructional systems.
  • Experience managing federal and state grants.
  • Experience presenting to Boards of Education.

Salary/Benefits

$140,000 - $160,000.  The District offers fringe benefits, including life, medical, dental and vision insurance.

Additional Notes

The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction serves as the District’s chief academic officer and provides strategic leadership for all instructional programs in grades K–8. This position is responsible for the development, implementation, evaluation and continuous improvement of curriculum, assessment, professional learning and instructional practices to ensure high levels of student achievement.

The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction works collaboratively with the Superintendent of Schools, Board of Education, principals, and district leadership to advance the District’s academic vision, ensure compliance with state and federal requirements and promote instructional excellence across all schools.
