Duties

  1. Establishes yearly and long-term goals for the library media program aligned with the district’s strategic plan.
  2. Administers the library media program, developing procedures to assure efficient operation and service.
  3. Maintains automated cataloging and a circulation system.
  4. Selects, purchases, and processes new materials to assure a current and balanced collection representing diverse points of view in accordance with the district materials selection policy.
  5. Supervises the regular inventory of the library collection, weeds obsolete and worn materials on an ongoing basis, and maintains an up-to-date catalog of collection.
  6. Operates library media center and supervises all district libraries.
  7. Arranges for interlibrary loan of materials.
  8. Conducts an annual survey as a means of evaluating the library media program and materials.
  9. Prepares and maintains the library budget.
  10. In coordination with district administration, writes and applies for grants as appropriate to support library media goals.
  11. Works with parents, teachers, students, administrators, and community members to enhance learning.
  12. Helps students develop attitudes, habits, and skills that will enable them to become lifelong readers and learners.
  13. Actively promotes reading and library usage.
  14. Collaborates with classroom teachers to expand the library collection with resources that support the curriculum.
  15. Assists teachers and students with technology needs.
  16. Assists in school/district technology needs related to keyboarding skills in the early grades.
  17. Assists in school/district technology needs related to state/local assessments.
  18. Participates in district curriculum meetings.
  19. Shares expertise by presenting at faculty meetings, parent meetings, and/or school board meetings.
  20. Encourages the use of the library media center as an active and collaborative learning space for students and staff.
  21. Plans and provides professional development opportunities for library aides and clerks.
  22. Assumes responsibility for other duties assigned.

Qualifications

  2. Master’s Degree from an accredited program in library and information studies
  3. A highly qualified candidate will hold appropriate state licensure as a school librarian and have completed a teacher preparation program
  4. Ability to work with students, parents, and staff

Salary/Benefits

Placement on certified scale at a level commensurate with education and media center experience.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Library Media Specialist provides a library media program that supports the curriculum by providing resources and training so that both students and teachers become independent users of information. The Library Media Specialist collaborates with teaching staff in the development of student literacy through the administration of the library media program, provides specialized instruction to students and teaching staff, and oversees the selection, organization, utilization, and maintenance of library, information, and curriculum resources.
