Assistant Principal - Jr. High School (Anticipated 2026-2027)

Duties

JOB SUMMARY: 

To provide support and assistance to the Principal in the development and implementation of procedures that will result in the maximum utilization of staff, materials, and facilities as they relate to students in Grades 6-8, and the achievement of the objectives of the District.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To perform this role successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function 

satisfactorily under the supervision of, and in partnership with, the building principal:

  • Ensure the implementation of an educational environment that meets the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical needs of all  students in partnership with the building principal;
  • Assist planning, development, organization, coordination, and supervision of instructional programs and activities; interpret and implement the district approved curriculum program in consideration of building plans;
  • Take an active leadership while partnering with the building principal in school improvement planning and implementation, including gathering, analyzing, and using student data with building teams to monitor program and delivery effectiveness;
  • Participate in school Improvement planning and implementation, including the gathering, analysis and use of student data with building teams;
  • Supports and implements established building policies, procedures, and regulations;
  • Assist in screening, selecting, assigning, supervising, and evaluating certified and educational support staff;
  • Work closely with the District to facilitate special education and other student services in the building
  • Provide leadership and coordinate the work of specialized groups of educators (school nurse, psychologists, social workers, counselors, speech clinicians, etc.)
  • Develop master schedules and calendars which maximize the achievement of program objectives, and provide leadership with the annual registration process;
  • Supervise and manage building operations to assure ensure safety and efficiency
  • Supervise and manage the guidance and counseling office and the registrar including maintenance of Student Records;
  • Supervise the operation of the procedures for all substitute teachers in the building;
  • Supervise the operations and performance of educational support personnel including maintenance and paraprofessionals;
  • Coordinate schedule and supervise building operations as assigned by the principals including cleaning, maintenance, lunchroom, extra-curricular programs, food service and building usage;
  • Supervise the investigation of all disturbances and emergencies, and conduct fire and tornado disaster drills as well as completion of appropriate reports;
  • Supervise all aspects of the co-curricular program including sports clubs and activities;
  • Facilitate the communication, record-keeping, and follow-up of student attendance concerns with appropriate District administrators;
  • Coordinate and organize Student Activities and special events related to school climate, student recognition, and promotion, and oversee the development of yearly activities calendar;
  • Coordinate all aspects of  field trips with staff and administration;
  • Supervise all transportation needs of the school and cooperation with the District;
  • Coordinate the assignment and orientation of the student teachers within the building, including working with supervising teachers, university supervisors and District liaisons;
  • Organize and supervise the procurement, issuance, maintenance, collection and storage of instructional materials; supervise the collection of all student fees fines and other obligations and maintain accurate student records;
  • Gather and compile data to assist with the preparation of state reports as assigned;
  • Schedule all building usage including after school programs as applicable;
  • Assist the budget planning process at the building level;
  • Serve as the building principal in the absence of the principal;
  • Perform other job related duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent or designee

  • Strong background in core content with experience with multi-tiered systems of support and data Analysis.
  • An administrative leadership style based on effective human relations and a student-focused continuous improvement model;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in curriculum and instruction at the junior high/middle school level;
  • Ability and flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
  • Demonstrated excellence as an educational leader with strong organizational, problem solving and human relations skills;
  • Effective verbal and written communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills with a record of building relationships that foster collegial trust, promote teacher efficacy, family engagement, and motivate others to aspire to high expectations and accountability with a common instructional focus;
  • A positive attitude toward the role, and flexibility as an innovative team builder;

  • Evidence of regular engagement and desire to continue professional learning, implementation, and reflection, in the areas of curriculum, child development, equitable practices, and instructional methods in the junior high school;
  • Experience with the integration of instructional technology to enhance delivery of learning
  • Knowledge of District policies, Local policies, State, and Federal laws relating to students
  • Understanding of the range of services and requirements to meet the needs of a diverse student population, including special education, enrichment, and multilingual services, and demonstrated use of strategies for ensuring practice of the same;
  • The vision, compassion, and enthusiasm for effective team leadership to motivate high standards and continuous improvement;
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in Spanish is strongly preferred

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The position may require the ability to participate fully in the training and regular certification and use of established methods of crisis management, including de-escalation and physical management. May require valid CPR and First Aid Certification,

Work is performed within the school/district environment where unusual temperature, noise, and hazards are relatively non-existent. Work requires the employee to perform the following critical physical demands of the job:

  • Ability to regularly communicate verbally and hear;
  • Ability to use close and distant vision and adjust focus/
  • Ability to push, pull, ambulate, perform tasks from a standing or seated position, and use fine motor manipulation during the normal performance of tasks and responsibilities
  • Ability to occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch and lift or move up to 30-50 pounds. 
  • Ability to travel from building to building and within the local community as needed.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE:

  • Master’s degree, from an accredited college or university, with training in administration, supervision, and/or curriculum and instruction
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with appropriate administrative endorsement (ie: Principal, Superintendent, etc.) 
  • Valid, Appropriate Illinois credentials to evaluate certified staff

 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three years of successful administrative or supervisory experience at the junior high/middle school level is preferred
  • Four years of successful teaching or related service experience is required, preferably at the junior high/middle school level

Salary/Benefits

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Minimum annual base salary for this position is $83,880, to be determined by the Superintendent based on experience and credentials. In addition to salary, this position offers fringe benefits, including, but not limited to, Board Contribution to the Teachers Retirement System (TRS), health, dental, vision, and life insurance.  This is a 12-month certified administrative, non-bargaining position. FLSA Exempt Status.
