Job Description: English Learner (EL) Educator

District: Beach Park District 3

Location: Beach Park Middle School

Reports To: Principal or Designee

Job Summary:

The English Learner (EL) Educator will provide instruction and support to English Learners (ELs) in accordance with Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requirements, district policies, and best practices. This position requires a strong understanding of second language acquisition, differentiated instruction, and culturally responsive teaching. The EL Educator will collaborate with classroom teachers, administrators, and parents to ensure ELs achieve academic success and develop English language proficiency.

Responsibilities:

  • Instruction:
    • Provide direct instruction in English language arts, content area support, and/or other subjects as appropriate, utilizing research-based strategies and aligned with the Illinois English Language Development Standards (IELDS).
    • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse linguistic, academic, and cultural needs of ELs.
    • Develop and implement Individualized Language Acquisition Plans (ILAPs) for each EL student, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
    • Assess ELs' language proficiency regularly using appropriate assessments, including the ACCESS for ELLs assessment, and maintain accurate records of student progress.
    • Integrate technology effectively into instruction to enhance learning and engagement.
    • Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that values cultural diversity and promotes student success.
  • Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with classroom teachers to co-plan and co-teach, providing support and strategies for integrating ELs into mainstream classrooms.
    • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and provide support in their preferred language, when possible.
    • Participate in school-wide professional development related to EL education and best practices.
    • Collaborate with other EL staff members to share resources and best practices.
    • Work with administrators and support staff to ensure ELs receive necessary services and accommodations.
  • Compliance:
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of EL student information, including assessment data, ILAPs, and parent communication.
    • Ensure compliance with all ISBE mandates related to EL education, including identification, placement, assessment, and program evaluation.
    • Participate in required meetings and professional development related to EL education.
  • Other Duties:
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Education or related field.
  • Certification:
    • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with an English as a Second Language (ESL) or Bilingual endorsement or
    • Valid Illinois PEL with a Transitional Bilingual Educator (TBE) endorsement.
  • Knowledge:
    • Deep understanding of second language acquisition theory and research.
    • Knowledge of the IELDS and their application to instruction and assessment.
    • Familiarity with various assessment tools for ELs, including ACCESS for ELLs.
    • Understanding of culturally responsive teaching practices.
    • Knowledge of special education law and procedures, particularly as they relate to ELs (preferred).
  • Skills:
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of 1 ELs.  
    • Strong classroom management skills.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, and parents.
    • Proficiency in using technology for instruction and record-keeping.
  • Experience:
    • Experience working with ELs in a classroom setting (preferred).
