Duties
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Superintendent of Schools, the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning provides vision and leadership for curriculum and instruction to strengthen academic achievement, instructional practices, and assessment systems. This role ensures that student learning and well-being remain the central focus of all initiatives.
The position is responsible for the planning, organization, and administration of curriculum, instruction, and professional learning for all certificated and classified staff. As a member of the Superintendent’s executive leadership team and cabinet, the Assistant Superintendent shares in the responsibility to lead the implementation of the district’s strategic plan and ensures alignment across schools and departments.
In addition, this role promotes and sustains a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture that advances educational equity for all scholars.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Vision/Strategy/Leadership:
- Serves as a strategic advisor, functional expert, and thought partner to the Superintendent, Cabinet, and Central Office Administrators, and Building Principals regarding academic strategies.
- Supports the Superintendent in leading the District’s Leadership team.
- Serves as the point of contact in the absence of the Deputy Superintendent.
- Advises the Superintendent on changes in trends, education updates, laws, rules, policies, and other complex issues within the District.
- Directs the development, revision, and implementation of the vertical curriculum in all subject areas, ensuring alignment with resources, assessment recommendations, suggested teaching strategies, and classroom activities and adhering to national and state standards.
- Assists the Superintendent regarding district curriculum and assessment and related staffing policies and procedures.
Leads the following:
- The curriculum PreK-12
- The District’s Curriculum Committee
- The District’s Professional Development Committee
Oversees the Following Programs:
- Multilingual Learners (ML)
- Gifted and Accelerated Learning Programs
- Grants, Accountability and Assessments
- All areas aligned to Teaching and Learning (T&L)
- All academic programs of the school district, including summer learning, credit recovery, enrichment, and accelerated programming
Administrative:
- Coordinates and collaborates with the Cabinet for all District-Wide professional development for certified and classified staff.
- Coordinates with the Deputy Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, and Chief Financial Officer to hire district-level leadership positions.
Evaluation:
- Evaluates the effectiveness of professional development programs.
- Evaluates the District’s Teaching and Learning staff.
- Provides supervision and direction to the Teaching & Learning Administrators.
- Develops the district’s instructional framework and provides professional development for the leadership team on the instructional framework.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI):
- Fosters thinking around the cultural beliefs and practices demonstrated across the District, including the values, beliefs, communication styles, and perceptions of its administrators and staff.
- Ensures that diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the forefront of the minds of stakeholders.
- Ensures that curricular resources are culturally relevant and reflect the district's cultural, racial, linguistic, and ethnic diversity.
Collaboration/Communication:
- Promotes a collaborative work environment to achieve common goals throughout the district.
- Provide the community with information regarding the District’s goals, missions, and programs.
- Works with the Deputy Superintendent, cabinet members, and principals to set priorities and implement curriculum and instruction consistent with best practices and district goals.
- Partners with the Superintendent, school and district leaders, and staff to develop and implement programs that ensure high student academic achievement.
- Collaborates with the Director of Grants Assessment and Accountability (DGAA) on grant budgeting and family, community, and engagement matters.
- Collaborates with the Information Technology (IT) director and assures the integration of technology and electronic tools in the Teaching and Learning department.
- Maintains communication with school and district leaders to promote a safe and positive learning environment for all students.
Curriculum:
- Guides school leaders in implementing and evaluating the school curriculum, including monitoring, revision, and professional development needs in all subject areas.
- Ensures the alignment of resources to curriculum, instruction, and assessment to ensure a Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum.
- Directs and supervises the work of curriculum consultants and team members to formulate action plans and modify programs and procedures for academic improvement.
- Leads all Teaching and Learning department reporting required by the Illinois State Board of Education.
Financial/Budget Responsibilities:
- Prepares the budget for the T&L department.
- Plans for and implements a curriculum management system that includes a schedule for purchasing and implementing curriculum and curricular resources.
- Leads grants that support and supplement the Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum.
Qualifications
Required Education:
- Master Degree in Educational Administration or Curriculum and Instruction
- PEL - General Administrative or Principal Endorsement
Required Experience/ Qualifications:
- Minimum of eight years of experience in education, including educational administration.
- Experience as a school principal.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience as a teacher at multiple grade levels is preferred.
- Experience as a school principal at multiple levels.
- Central office leadership and training.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge and application of written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in person to resolve issues related to areas of responsibility.
- Knowledge and ability to promote a positive learning culture.
- Ability to apply effective leadership skills to inspire and motivate employees.
- Practical knowledge and experience with concepts and principles of curriculum design, development, and evaluation.
- Expertise in evaluation, assessment, accountability, and school improvement planning.
- Ability to organize and prioritize assigned tasks and projects
- Ability to promote consensus with groups of individuals having diverse interests and values.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
Salary/Benefits
Level-1 Cabinet Member/Salary Range: $148,662-$176,302
