Duties

PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the school principal or program supervisor, the STEM Teacher is directly responsible for planning and designing a STEM curricular academic program that promotes interdisciplinary STEM activities into the core curriculum.  The STEM Teacher plans and expands efforts that support high-quality integrative STEM education for K-12 students and utilizes knowledge about best practices and instructional strategies to develop STEM lessons and resources that directly support curriculum implementation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Delivers STEM-oriented instruction (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through project-based learning methods.

  • Develop and maintain a schedule to embed Exploratorium activities.

  • Utilize research-based, best practices interventions, programs, and strategies to implement, design and execute an individualized curriculum to provide an appropriate educational program for students.

  • Compile and maintain necessary records and reports for the purpose of maintaining accurate student records.

  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques, instructional media, and performance assessment which guide the learning process toward academic and achievement goals designed to meet individual student needs.

  • Instruct students to work collaboratively to solve problems and to think logically and creatively.

  • Maintain appropriate student behavior control and participate in the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans with integrity when appropriate for classroom management and providing a safe, learning environment for all students.

  • Maintain effective communication with students, staff, parents, and administration for the purpose of collaboration and planning.

  • Participate in professional growth activities on a yearly basis including recertification for CPI, workshops, in-services, professional reading materials, and/or other available offerings at NSSEO for the purpose of increasing knowledge and ability to implement interventions with integrity and incorporate best practices. 
  • Participate in building or program activities/committees and meetings as appropriate for the purpose of team building and adherence to NSSEO policies and procedures.

  • Plan and supervise the functions of all classroom aides/assistants assigned to class or case load for the purpose of effectively meeting student goals.

  • Proficiently use technology to communicate, collect and analyze data, and compile reports for the purpose of efficiently reporting information and communicating in a timely manner.

  • Use data-driven decision making to monitor student performance and make instructional/behavioral decisions as appropriate for the purpose of implementing effective interventions to facilitate student progress.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator’s License (PEL) endorsed for Special Education (PK-21) for Learning Behavior Specialist I

  • Valid Professional Educator’s License (PEL) endorsed for one of the following: Computer Science or Technology Specialist or demonstrated experience in instructional technology.

  • Participate in twelve (12) hours of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training and techniques.

  • Collaborate effectively with students, parents, and other professionals.
