Duties
PURPOSE:
The purpose of an ESL teacher is to support systematic English language development, support access to grade-level content learning, and serve as an advocate and local expert to support colleagues and school(s) in better meeting ELLs needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Provide training and coaching for NSSEO teams aligned to best practices in supporting multilingual students with disabilities
- Consult with teams to develop and implement appropriate language supports and assistance for individual EL students within NSSEO programs
- Coordinate with NSSEO teams and resident school districts on the identification, placement and assessment of multilingual students attending NSSEO programs (Kirk, Miner, Timber Ridge)
- Ensure appropriate completion and recording of required documentation including Home Language Surveys, screening and assessment results, and parent notification letters
- Support the administration of ACCESS and Alternative ACCESS assessments within NSSEO programs
- Participate in IEP meetings for students with EL status to support teams in documenting and incorporating appropriate language assistance, linguistic and cultural accommodations, and ACCESS/Alternate ACCESS assessment accommodations in students’ IEPs
- Assist students in the English language to further their education and growth
- Develop lesson plans, instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student
- Effectively establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
- Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports as specified by the district
- Effectively communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students’ progress and interpret the school program
- Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and supporting all students on their caseload
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities
- Participate in the evaluation process with the appropriate administrator to improve performance according to the district evaluation plan
- Collaborate with members of the educational team in selecting appropriate texts, materials, and instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records
- Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the working day as assigned
