Duties

OBJECTIVES
To help each student develop competence in basic mathematical skills and an understanding of the structure of mathematics; to motivate each student to apply mathematical understanding and skills in the solution of practical problems; and to encourage students to develop their special talents in the field of mathematics.  Teaches courses in mathematics to middle school students using the course of study adopted by the board of Education and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1.  Applies mathematical practices through problem-based learning, inquiry and design.
2.  Develops lesson plans and uses appropriate instructional aids, stressing discovery, laboratory learning
     methods and interactive projects with real-life applications.
3.  Demonstrates mathematical concepts using models, computers, and other standard or teacher-prepared
     instructional aids.
4. Provides opportunities when needed for individualized and small-group instruction to adapt the
    curriculum to the needs of each student.
5.  Designs learning activities that will relate mathematics to the physical world with the creation of
     original solutions to real-world problems.
6.  Guides students in selection of appropriate elective projects and experiments.
7.  Instructs students in use of eye protection and safety guards, and in the use, care, and safe operation of
     tools and equipment.
8.  Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property.  Makes minor adjustments and
     requests repairs to tools and equipment as required.
9.  Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive
     classroom environment.
10.  Evaluates each student’s progress in mathematical knowledge and skills.
11.  Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids to the interest and maturity level of students;   
     maintains required inventory records.
12.  Communicates with parents to interpret contemporary methods in teaching mathematics and with
     parents and administrators and other appropriate professional staff members to discuss the individual   
     student’s progress.
13. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping
       students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
14. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
15. Participates in curriculum, instruction and professional developmental programs.
16. Shares in the sponsorship of student activities such as mathematics teams, and participates in faculty
      committees.
17. Adapts the curriculum to provide individual, small-group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of
      the individual student.
18. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and
      in self-selected professional growth activities.
19. Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative   
      regulations and procedures of the school district.
20. Provides a rigorous and interdisciplinary academic environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with:
  • Middle School Mathematics endorsement
