Duties

  • Use the Creative Curriculum system, develop lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate for young children
  • Provide and maintain a safe environment to prevent injuries to children and staff
  • Promote good health by making sure classroom materials are clean and disinfected on a regular basis
  • Complete ASQ’s and ESI-R screenings and developmental inventory
  • Prepare and engage children in developmentally appropriate activities and experiences
  • Recognize and respect a variety of cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and developmental needs
  • Communicate respectfully and on a regular basis with children’s family members
  • Create a learning environment that is developmentally appropriate and conducive to children’s learning
  • Interact frequently, respectfully, and in a nurturing way with all children in the classroom
  • Keep in compliance with all Head Start Standards and Henry Booth House expectations
  • Use Teaching Strategies GOLD to document observations of children on a daily basis
  • Insure that classroom and activities are inclusive of children with special needs
  • Provide individualized planning for all children in the classroom with emphasis on children with special needs and the goals stated on their Individualized Education Plan
  • Maintain confidentiality of information regarding children and their families
  • Participate in professional development, in-service trainings, and pre-service trainings
  • Assist in the recruitment of children for the Head Start program
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Creative Curriculum
  • Working knowledge of Teaching Strategies GOLD
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or Bachelor’s in any field with a minimum of 30 hours of ECE semester credits
  • Gateway to Opportunity credential of ECE level 4 is a must.
  • Must have experience working in an early childhood classroom
  • Prior Head Start experience is preferred

The Head Start Teacher is responsible for providing children with a developmentally appropriate, safe, and healthy environment to advance their physical and cognitive growth and development, in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards. The comprehensive goal of the teacher is to provide children with high quality educational instruction and to prepare them for kindergarten.
