Duties
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education, Building Principal and Assistant Principal
JOB GOAL: To facilitate student success and growth in academic, functional, and social emotional learning skills through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc. The exceptional learners teacher will implement an intensive instruction model, using the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) as directed and supervised by staff trained in this methodology.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans and implements academic instruction for students who exhibit communication, social and behavioral challenges using evidence based methods (ie Direct Instruction) and modified curriculum materials (ie STAR, VB-MAPP, Unique, Etc.) as well as general education curriculum.
- Participates in the implementation of positive behavior support initiative (PBIS) building initiatives.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of behavior support plans including a classroom plan and any needed individual plans as well as carries out these plans with fidelity until they are modified by the team.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive data collection system that encompasses academic, functional, and behavioral data with or without digital collection capabilities.
- Addresses the wide variety of instructional needs of students and works with teachers to design methods of learning that are most appropriate for students with IEPs.
- Consults frequently with related services providers (Speech Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapists, etc.) on matters relating to instruction and generalization of communication and fine-visual motor skills, and sensory processing.
- Assists in the evaluation of ongoing programs and makes recommendations for change.
- Helps teachers identify student strengths and weaknesses and matches these skills with appropriate techniques and resources.
- Works with support staff and school administrators to facilitate the coordination of the special education program with the total curriculum.
- Works with the classroom teacher and district personnel to coordinate instruction designed to meet the individual needs of students.
- Utilizes an academic, functional, and behavioral data collection system for progress monitoring of student progress on a weekly and or biweekly basis.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
- Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with others.
- Develops, implements and monitors student IEP needs in compliance with state and federal law and district procedures.
- Provides for professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher education.
- Possesses experience with the multi-tier system of supports (MTSS) process.
- Ensures that student conduct and attendance conforms to the school standards and school district discipline policies.
- Utilizes current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Utilizes knowledge of instructional goals and objectives along with Common Core State Standards.
- Utilizes knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Applies knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Obtains knowledge of computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Organizes and coordinates work.
- Communicates effectively with students and parents.
- Engages in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with others.
- Administers standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the director of special education, principal/assistant principal, and other district office administrators as designated by the superintendent.
- Adheres to a professional code of ethics which includes confidentiality of school related matters and loyalty to the school district.

Salary/Benefits
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 180 days. Salary and benefits per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
