Duties

POSITION SUMMARY

In collaboration with staff, families, students, and communities, the School Psychologist helps create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students.  The School Psychologist functions as part of The Cove School’s Student Support Services team and provides a variety of supports, including psycho-educational assessment, behavioral and academic consultation with teachers and parents, and collaboration with public schools and program leadership. The School Psychologist is directly responsible for the psychological assessment of academic, social, emotional, and behavioral domains utilizing problem-solving and standardized evaluations. The School Psychologist monitors the completion of case study evaluations and participates in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) conferences and problem-solving meetings designed to maximize students’ social, emotional, and educational success. 

REPORTS TO: Clinical Director

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):

Data-Based Decision-Making and Accountability

  • Evaluate and apply research as a foundation for service delivery and use various techniques and technology resources for data collection, measurement, and analysis to support effective practices at the individual, group, and/or systems levels

Consultation and Collaboration

  • Serve as Local Education Agency (LEA) for Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings 
  • Provide assistance to staff in the design and implementation of appropriate interventions and accommodations for students, consistent with their learning profiles 
  • Participate in curriculum planning and program development 

Interventions and Instructional Support to Develop Cognitive and Academic Skills

  • Integrate psychological services into the classroom environment 
  • Collaborate with teachers regarding students’ goals, programs, and progress 

Interventions and Mental Health Services to Develop Social and Life Skills

  • Provide insight into the development of functional assessments and behavior intervention plans 
  • Contribute to program development that furthers the integration of social, coping and problem-solving skills in the classroom 

School-Wide Practices To Promote Learning

  • Coordinate and/or collaborate with a wide range of individuals/agencies to promote and provide comprehensive services to students and families 
  • Provide and/or assist in professional development for staff, parents, and/or community 
  • Participate in faculty meetings, team meetings, school committees, and school events (e.g. Field Trips, Parent Night, Parent Teacher Conferences, Project Fair, and Graduation)  

Preventive and Responsive Services

  • Lead and implement effective crisis intervention efforts 

Family-School Collaboration Services

  • Communicate with parents and home districts to ensure a smooth continuum of service delivery 

Community Collaboration Services

  • Act as a liaison between The Cove School and private tutors or educational therapists to consolidate services to students
  • Serve as a liaison between The Cove School and home school districts
  • Represent The Cove School at local/national conferences=

Legal, Ethical, and Professional Practice

  • Participate in ongoing professional growth activities including workshops, in-services, professional reading and/or other available offerings; maintain knowledge of current research and practices 
  • Maintain Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification: participate in initial twelve (12) hours of CPI training and techniques and annual required refresher training 

Qualifications

DESIRED EXPERIENCE

Certification: 

  • State of Illinois Professional Educator’s License (PEL); School Personnel license/certificate in School Psychology, General Administrative preferred

Experience

  • Knowledge of learning processes; appropriate instructional interventions to meet students’ needs; and ability to implement and assess their effectiveness
  • Knowledge of methods of assessment and systematic processes to collect data; ability to translate assessment results into empirically-based decisions about service delivery; and ability to evaluate outcomes of services
  • Knowledge of behavioral mental health, collaborative and or consultation models and methods, and their application

COMPENSATION

The salary for this position is competitive and depends on prior experience. A competitive benefits package will also be offered.

The Cove School is a non-public therapeutic day school educating 165 students with complex learning disabilities in Kindergarten through 12th grade in Northbrook, IL, just 35 minutes north of Chicago. Our mission is to create an exceptional environment where children with learning disabilities “learn how to learn” and develop the emotional and social skills to reach within, achieve above, exceed beyond and maximize their growth. 

For 75 years, The Cove School has been a national leader within its field, providing award-winning individualized instruction and specialized services that help students develop the skills and self-confidence required to successfully transition to community schools or post-secondary education and careers. Classes are kept small. Teaching is flexible and varies according to the individual student’s learning style. A team of onsite specialists works collaboratively to provide students intensive, integrated services. Cove students come from over 60 different public schools throughout the Chicago area. Families can also choose to fund tuition privately.
