7th Grade ELA/Social Studies Teacher

Duties

Position Summary

The 7th Grade English Language Arts/Social Studies Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-based instruction that develops students' literacy, communication, critical thinking, and understanding of history, civics, geography, and culture. This position supports the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development of middle school students while maintaining a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment. The teacher fosters student growth through rigorous instruction, positive relationships, high expectations, and collaboration with colleagues, families, and support staff.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Embrace and help grow the mission of Pleasant Valley which is to "engage, inspire, and empower each student towards academic excellence and citizenship."
  • Deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in English Language Arts and Social Studies aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards.
  • Develop students' reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, research, and critical thinking skills.
  • Teach students to analyze informational and literary texts using evidence-based reading and writing strategies.
  • Foster students' understanding of history, geography, civics, economics, culture, and responsible citizenship through engaging and relevant instruction.
  • Plan and implement lessons that encourage inquiry, collaboration, discussion, and problem-solving.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 plans, varying academic abilities, and behavioral needs.
  • Implement accommodations, modifications, and interventions as directed by student plans and support staff.
  • Utilize formative and summative assessment data to monitor student progress, identify learning gaps, and provide targeted interventions.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, structured, inclusive, and positive classroom environment.
  • Teach, model, and reinforce classroom expectations, respectful communication, responsible decision-making, and positive student behavior.
  • Utilize positive behavior supports, restorative practices, and trauma-informed strategies to support student success and self-regulation.
  • Build positive relationships with students while fostering a classroom culture of respect, responsibility, perseverance, and academic growth.
  • Maintain regular, proactive communication with families regarding student academic progress, attendance, behavior, and classroom expectations.
  • Collaborate with grade-level teams, special education staff, intervention staff, instructional coaches, and administration to support student achievement.
  • Participate in data meetings, curriculum development, professional learning communities (PLCs), and school improvement initiatives.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, arrival, dismissal, assemblies, and other school settings as assigned.
  • Participate in professional development, district initiatives, and school-sponsored activities as applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned by administration.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with appropriate Middle Grades or Secondary English Language Arts and/or Social Science endorsement(s). 
  • Must have a positive attitude and positive approach to meeting the needs of all students.
  • Demonstrate strong classroom management using consistent expectations, positive behavior supports, and professional judgment.
  • Display fair judgment, time management, and an ability to prioritize.
  • Organized and able to multitask.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 plans, English Learners, and varying academic abilities.
  • Ability to effectively integrate instructional technology into daily instruction.
  • Demonstrates consistent attendance, reliability, and professionalism.

Physical Requirements

 

  • Ability to stand, walk, and actively supervise students for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to move throughout the classroom and school building while providing instruction and supervision.
  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and classroom equipment as needed.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to behavioral, medical, or safety situations.

Salary/Benefits

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Schedule: Determined by years of experience and total graduate semester hours. A teacher can increase their salary by moving down the salary schedule with more experience, by moving horizontally towards the advanced degree columns, or by doing both.

Schedule & Time Off

  • 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday
  • 180 total working days per school year
  • 12 sick days and 3 personal days per school year

Evaluations

Evaluation of certified employees shall be governed by Article 24A of the Illinois School Code which establishes that each teacher in contractual continued service is evaluated at least once in the course of every 2 to 3 school years.
