Duties
- Purpose of the position
Zion Lutheran Church and School is looking for a principal to provide spiritual and academic leadership in the school, manage the day to day operations, direct the school’s educational program & ministry and participate in the total ministry of the congregation. The primary responsibilities of this position are, in collaboration with the teachers: scheduling, curriculum development, extracurricular activities, personnel management, public relations and development, emergency procedures, and facility operations.
- Accountability
- The principal is directly accountable to the Board of Christian Education for the fulfillment of responsibilities assigned in the job description.
- The principal will work as a team member with the pastor of the congregation and the teachers of the school in accord with the congregational policy in developing and implementing an
effective total ministry.
III. Responsibilities
- Provides spiritual leadership for the School in all relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff and all others associated with the school.
- Serves as the instructional leader, responsible for the development and improvement of the educational program at Zion.
- Directs the staff in planning, implementing and evaluating the curricular and extracurricular activities provided by the School.
- Screens, interviews and recommends candidates for employment in order to provide students with a quality Christian education.
- Assumes supervisory responsibility for all staff members – teachers, aides, secretaries, student teachers, librarians and volunteers.
- Maintains personal contact with all classes, making classroom visitations while classes are in session.
- Develops and implements a program of in-service staff development, designed to meet their needs of professional growth and to improve the teaching/learning process.
- Oversees the fiscal affairs, business dealings and budget preparation and administration pertaining to the School.
- Manages the school facility with consideration for the health and safety of all who occupy it.
- Maintains effective communication.
- Promote pupil and staff morale and cohesion
- Promote close cooperation and communication between parents and teachers.
- Publicizes the school program to the congregation and community, as well as other churches and day-care centers in the area, with the objective of conveying a positive image of the school as a Christ-centered educational agency of the church.
- Cooperates with the local public school administration in matters of common interest and concern.
- Relates to district and synodical executives within The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod in matters of reports, recommendations, cooperative projects, instructional materials development, teacher candidate information etc.
- Recommends and implements enrollment policies for students which are consistent with congregational and governmental policies.
- Is available to counsel with students, teachers and parents.
- Keep informed of current educational trends and theories through such activities as the following:
- Participation in conferences, workshops and seminars.
- Post-graduate courses
- Professional involvement in local, district, state or national levels.
- Delegates responsibilities to staff members and manages as appropriate.
- Maintains a current list of substitute teachers.
- Recognizes and celebrates staff accomplishments.
- Maintains a current list of substitute teachers.
- Supervises and oversees all aspects of the athletic program
- Maintains fair, consistent and effective discipline and attendance systems with high standards that are consistent with the philosophy, values, and mission of the school.
- Serve as ex-officio member of the Board of Christian Education and Church Council.
- Reports on school programs and activities.
- Recommends new policies, programs and materials.
- Represents the faculty to the Board of Christian Education and the Board of Christian Education to the faculty.
- Implements policies and decisions of the Board of Christian Education.
- Assume other responsibilities in consultation with the Board of Christian Education.
- Operates within guidelines established by national, state or local governments which are applicable to our school.
- Establishes and maintains accreditation with such accrediting bodies as are designated by the Board of Christian Education.

- Provides for proper collection and safe storage of school records.
- Provides Christian educational leadership within the parish.
- Gives constant updates to the Board of Christian Education as to the status of the school.
- Work with the Board of Trustees for the maintenance of the school property.
