Full-Time Permanent Substitute Teacher (District)

Duties

Position Summary

The Permanent Substitute Teacher provides instructional, behavioral, and supervisory support by serving in various classroom assignments across the district as needed. This position requires flexibility, strong classroom management skills, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing assignments while maintaining a safe, positive, and productive learning environment for students.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Embrace and help grow the mission of Pleasant Valley which is to “engage, inspire, and empower each student towards academic excellence and citizenship”. 
  • Provide substitute coverage in classrooms and programs across PreK–8, including general education, special education, intervention/RtI, and specialist areas such as PE, Music, Drama, Band, Library, and Art. 
  • Serve in either instructional or support roles as needed, including classroom teacher, paraprofessional, intervention, or classroom assistant assignments . 
  • Will need to be at either school on any given day based on absences. Lunch breaks will vary on a day-to-day basis depending on which position you are covering.
  • Here is an example of what a work week might look like:
    • Monday: Kindergarten Teacher (8:00AM - 3:30PM)
    • Tuesday: PE Teacher at the Primary School (8:00AM - 3:30PM)
    • Wednesday: 8th Grade Math Teacher (7:30AM - 3:00PM)
    • Thursday: 5th/6th Special Education (7:30AM - 3:00PM)
    • Friday: Bright Futures PreK Teacher Assistant (8:00AM - 3:30PM)
  • Implement classroom expectations, routines, and behavior supports established by the assigned teacher or program. 
  • Support implementation of classroom routines, accommodations, behavioral expectations, and individualized supports as established by the assigned teacher or program. 
  • Work effectively with students with IEPs, 504 plans, behavioral needs, and varying academic abilities. 
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other school settings to ensure safety and appropriate conduct. 
  • Communicate regularly with administration, teachers, and support staff regarding assignments, student needs, and operational matters. 
  • Uphold the appropriate, positive, inclusive and safe learning environment that has been established by the absent teacher.
  • Daily responsibilities and duties will change on a day-to-today basis and could change within the course of a day..
  • Other duties as assigned by administration.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Skills

  • Must hold a valid Illinois Substitute (SUB), Short-Term Substitute (STS), Professional Educator License (PEL), Paraprofessional (PARA), or Short-Term PARA license.

  • Experience working with children and/or in an educational setting preferred.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in working across multiple grade levels, classrooms, and assignments.
  • Must have a positive attitude and positive approach to meeting the needs of all students.
  • Demonstrates strong classroom management using consistent expectations, positive behavior supports, and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Ability to remain calm, flexible, and solution-oriented in a fast-paced and high-needs school environment.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.
  • Demonstrates consistent attendance, punctuality, reliability, and professionalism.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include changes to assignments or locations on short notice.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and actively supervise students for extended periods.
  • Ability to move between classrooms, grade levels, and buildings as assigned.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to behavioral, instructional, and safety situations.

Schedule & Time Off

  • 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday
  • 180 total working days per school year
  • 12 sick days and 3 personal days per school year
