Duties

Responsibilities

  • Consult with administration and Building Leadership Teams to identify priorities, develop action plans, and monitor progress for the district
  • Support administrators, teachers, and other school staff in identifying root causes of student behavioral issues and ways to meet students social and emotional needs
  • Team with guidance counselor in supporting student needs transitioning from each grade level center (elementary-middle school-high school)
  • Coach school staff in developing referral, assessment and progress monitoring systems to coordinate Tier 2 & 3 behavioral health and SEL supports
  • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled IEP meetings as needed to engage in collaborative problem-solving around appropriate school, classroom or student level interventions for referred students
  • Train and/or support classroom teachers in the development and implementation of SEL supports through professional development as part of inhouse school improvement
  • Provide preventative student support through classroom presentations/instruction
  • Assist students transitioning from suspensions and hospitalizations returning to school
  • Support schools in developing community partnerships and linkages for social services and behavioral health supports for high-risk students
  • Advise the district during emergency and crisis situations and facilitates communication and collaboration with other local and government agencies
  • Other duties as assigned by superintendent and/or designee(s)

Qualifications

Type of Education:

  • Masters Degree in Social Work, School Counseling or a related field.

Type of Experience and Number of Years:

  • Experience working in or with adolescents and youth and/or families with a focus on social, emotional, and behavioral supports
  • Experience delivering evidence-based Tier 2 & 3 social, emotional or behavioral interventions

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Outstanding knowledge of child development, social and environmental conditioning, cultural diversity, psychopathology and family systems
    • Ability to develop supportive consultative relationships with administration and school leaders, classroom teachers, school-based mental health professionals, and other stakeholders
    • Knowledge of best practices in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support to meet students’ social and emotional needs
    • Familiarity with ISBE SEL Standards
    • Sound knowledge of student complications and suitable change strategies for resolving them
    • Skilled in the use of behavioral health assessments and progress monitoring data to drive critical conversations and planning
    • Ability to connect with school and/or community-based programming to offer fundamental social service or behavioral health services for children and families
    • Cultural competency and ability to navigate and promote sensitivity with issues of race and equity
    • Skilled multi-tasker and excellent time manager; ability to effectively achieve multiple goals and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Strong analytical, time management, organizational and interpersonal skills
    • Passion and urgency for the critical need to address SEL and behavioral health to improve the lives of students and families

Additional Notes

The Social & Emotional Learning Behavioral Health Specialist is a full-time district position. The SEL Behavioral Health Specialist will provide on-site behavioral health consultation and support to the district to address barriers that interfere with students academic, social and emotional development. The SEL Behavioral Health Specialist will serve as the lead in evidence-based strategies to support a coordinated and effective school climate, classroom management, social-emotional learning, restorative practices, and behavioral interventions process at school.
