Lead Teacher Alternative Education - Macomb Site

Duties

Position Summary

The Lead Teacher is responsible for providing instructional leadership and assisting with the coordination of teaching and learning activities at the ROYALS Alternative Education Program in Macomb. This position serves as the instructional lead for the site while maintaining direct responsibility for student instruction. The Lead Teacher works collaboratively with the Director, Principal, Student Services Coordinator, and ROYALS staff to ensure a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment that promotes academic growth, positive behavior, school engagement, and successful post-secondary outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides instructional leadership and supports the implementation of the ROYALS educational program.
  • Facilitates student learning through online, blended, and face-to-face instructional models.
  • Monitors student academic progress, attendance, engagement, and behavior, implementing interventions as needed.
  • Collaborates with the Student Services Coordinator to develop, monitor, and revise individual student success plans.
  • Supervises students throughout the instructional day, including students participating in remote learning when applicable.
  • Assists with the coordination of daily building operations and serves as the site instructional leader when the Principal, Director, or Student Services Coordinator is unavailable.
  • Works collaboratively with staff to maintain a positive, safe, and orderly learning environment.
  • Communicates regularly with students, parents/guardians, and referring school districts regarding student progress, attendance, behavior, and program expectations.
  • Assists in the preparation of reports, documentation, and records required for program operation and state reporting.
  • Coordinates and maintains the National School Lunch Program and all associated program requirements.
  • Participates in student intake, transition, and reintegration processes as assigned.
  • Attends and actively participates in staff meetings, professional learning, and required training.
  • Works collaboratively with the ROYALS team to support continuous program improvement and the achievement of organizational goals.
  • Makes recommendations to improve instructional practices, student services, and overall program effectiveness.
  • Maintains a valid Illinois Professional Educator License and completes all required professional development and mandated training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director, Principal, or Regional Superintendent.

Qualifications

  • Holds a valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with appropriate endorsements required for the assignment.
  • Successful teaching experience is preferred; experience working with at-risk, alternative education, or diverse student populations is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with instructional technology and common computer applications, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, email, online learning platforms, and student information systems
  • Demonstrates the ability to build positive, professional relationships with students, families, staff, referring school districts, and community partners.
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.

Salary/Benefits

  • Annual salary range of $45,000–$62,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Additional Notes

ROYALS is an alternative education program serving students through Safe School and Truants’ Alternative Program services. The Macomb ROYALS site typically serves 25 students or fewer and is staffed by one teacher and four support staff members who work together to support student success.
