Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
  • Teaches skills, knowledge and scientific attitudes through courses in general science, earth sciences, biology and the physical sciences, using the course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities
  • Plans a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions and student experiments; organizes laboratory activities for optimum participation and learning
  • Teaches through a hands-on approach, the processes of scientific inquiry
  • Demonstrates scientific concepts by use for scientific apparatus, experiments; organizes laboratory activities for optimum participation and learning
  • Teaches through a hands-on approach, the processes of scientific inquiry
  • Demonstrates scientific concepts by use for scientific apparatus, experiments, charts, sketches and other instructional aids
  • Uses individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects and experiments are being worked on simultaneously
  • Instructs pupils in the proper use, care and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment and plant and animal life
  • Provides safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment and tools and maintains required inventories
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional strategies emphasizing discovery and laboratory learning methods
  • Adapts the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of individual pupils
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupils’ progress and interpret the school program
  • Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and instructional strategies appropriate to the subject
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District and/or self-selected professional growth activities, and meets the District’s policies for continuing university study
  • Participates in the evaluation process with the appropriate administrator to improve performance according to the District evaluation plan
  • Participates with the Principal in selecting appropriate texts, materials and instructional aids, and maintains required inventory records
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-the classroom activities during the working day as assigned
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with the District testing program
  • Participates, as appropriate, in curriculum development programs
  • Demonstrates the effective use of digital tools in teaching and learning practices to help students achieve learning targets
  • Models use of digital tools in instructional practices
  • Regularly connects with continuous professional learning communities to advance professional practices for 21st Century Learning and Teaching
  • Participates in the evaluation process with the appropriate administrator to improve performance according to the Flossmoor Teacher Evaluation Plan (FTEP).

Qualifications

Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with middle grades (5-8) science endorsement (preferred) or 6-12 science endorsement

Salary/Benefits

Starting salary not less than $42,385.68

Salary commensurate with experience and advanced education
