Elementary Special Education Teacher 26-27

Duties

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, individualized instruction and support to students with disabilities in grades K–8. This role includes developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), collaborating with general education staff, communicating with families, and ensuring compliance with all federal and state special education regulations. The teacher supports students academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally to promote student growth and success within the least restrictive environment.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with IDEA and state regulations

  • Provide direct instruction to students using evidence-based instructional strategies

  • Adapt curriculum, materials, and instructional methods to meet individual student needs

  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and accommodations

  • Collect and maintain accurate data on student progress and performance

  • Participate in IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, and problem-solving team meetings

  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and concerns

  • Implement behavior intervention plans and provide social-emotional supports as needed

  • Consult with related service providers (speech, OT, PT, social work, school psych, etc.)

  • Maintain accurate student records and required documentation

  • Ensure compliance with all special education timelines and legal requirements

  • Supervise paraprofessionals, when assigned

  • Participate in professional development and staff meetings

  • Promote a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment

  • Perform other duties as assigned by administration

  • Strong understanding of special education laws and best practices

  • Ability to develop meaningful, measurable student goals

  • Skill in positive behavior supports and classroom management

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism


Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the school day

  • Ability to lift up to ___ pounds (as determined by district)

  • Ability to assist students with physical needs, when required


Work Environment

  • Classroom, therapy rooms, and general education settings

  • Subject to noise, active students, and varying behavioral needs


 

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Valid state certification/licensure in Special Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred

  • Knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, and special education compliance

  • Experience working with students with diverse learning, emotional, and behavioral needs preferred

  • Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills

  • Ability to differentiate instruction and manage diverse classrooms

  • Proficiency with educational technology and data systems
