Middle School Principal

Duties

Position Title: Principal 

Reports to:   Superintendent

Supervises:  All classroom teachers, specials teachers, support staff (all personnel serving in assigned school)

Position Purpose: In the context of a Professional Learning Community, the principal will provide excellence in education through leadership, supervision, and administrative skills to promote a high quality, comprehensive learning environment for the educational, social and emotional development of each student.
 
Work Calendar:   Full-Time, 11 month
 
The Building Principal shall be responsible for the following duties and perform other duties that may be assigned by the Superintendent:

  • More than 51% of principals’ time shall be devoted to instructional leadership
  • Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school
  • Initiates, designs, and implements programs to meet specific needs of the school
  • Keeps superintendent informed of the school’s activities and problems
  • Makes recommendations to the superintendent concerning the school’s administration and instruction
  • Assists in the management and preparation of the school budget
  • Supervises the maintenance of all required building records and reports
  • Interprets and enforces all district policies and administrative procedures
  • Maintains active and positive relationships with students, parents and community
  • Leads in the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of the instructional program
  • Schedules classes within established guidelines to meet student needs
  • Assists in the development, revision, and evaluation of the curriculum
  • Supervises support programs, which include reading programs and guidance programs, to enhance individual student education and development
  • Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline, as necessary, according to due process rights of students and Board policies
  • Establishes procedures and guides for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline
  • Facilitates events for student achievement in all areas and attends school sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events
  • Assumes responsibility for student attendance, health and conduct
  • Assumes responsibility for his/her professional growth and development through membership and participation in the affairs of professional organizations; attendance at regional, state, or national meetings; and enrollment in advanced coursework
  • Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with other practitioners
  • Supervises all professional, paraprofessionals, administrative and support personnel attached to the school
  • Assist in the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, assigning, and evaluating of the school’s professional staff
  • Supervises the school’s teaching process and instructional strategies
  • Orients newly assigned staff members and assists in their development
  • Conducts meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school
  • Recommends, according to established procedures, the removal of a teacher whose work is unsatisfactory
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety and administration of the school  building
  • Supervises the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and nonacademic purposes
  • Plans and supervises fire drills, building and bus evacuation drills, tornado drills, and emergency preparedness program
  • Provides for adequate inventories of school property and for the security and accountability for that property
  • Supervises all activities and programs that are outgrowths of the school’s curriculum
  • Supervises and evaluates the school’s extracurricular program
  • Participates in principals’ meetings, negotiations, meetings, and such other meetings as are required or appropriate
  • Cooperates with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparations
  • Responds, in a timely manner, to written and oral request for information
  • Assumes all responsibility for all official school correspondence and news releases
  • Organizes and administers the public relations program for the school
  • Serves as a member of such committees and attends such meetings as directed by the superintendent
  • Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal

Qualifications

  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL), Principal endorsement
  • Masters in Educational Leadership
  • At least five years of successful teaching experience, preferably in K-8

Salary/Benefits

$90,000, plus benefits
