GIFTED/CHALLENGE TEACHER
Gifted Endorsement Required
Effective 2024-20235 School Year
Position Goal: To provide teaching strategies and techniques that will enrich and expand the learning opportunity of children who are identified as being gifted in a specific academic area.
The Gifted/Challenge Teacher shall be responsible for the following duties and perform other
duties that may be assigned by administration:
Superintendent/Board:
- Observe and adhere to all Board of Education policies and regulations, and all administrative rules and procedures
- Attend Board meetings when necessary to provide supportive materials and information
- Follow all State of Illinois codes relative to the requirements of the Gifted program
- Communicate Gifted initiatives, objectives and programs to the Administration, Staff and Community
- Assist in the writing of a Gifted program proposal to be reviewed/approved by the Superintendent/ Principal and submitted for state approval.
District-wide
- Assist in the identification of eligible students for the Gifted Program.
- Place all eligible students into appropriate academic groups for instruction
- Work with Principals to schedule classes so that all identified students have a regular time to attend gifted classes
- Collaborate with teachers to determine time to pull students out of regular class, which will cause the least disruption to the classroom
- Provide leadership to the teachers of enrichment/gifted students as a teacher, instructional coach and specialist in the areas of compacting curriculum, developing tiered assignments, and facilitating the design of differentiated curriculum and instruction for Gifted and high achieving students
- Collaborate with classroom teacher, media/library specialist(s), and technology coordinator to offer a continuum of services that supports them in maximizing each child’s opportunities for challenge and growth
- Determine necessary materials needed to meet the requirements of the Gifted Proposal and request the order for purchase
- Teach the Gifted class which encompasses all the duties and responsibilities of a classroom teacher. (refer to PERA and Senate Bill 7)
- Provide professional development relative to the Gifted program for staff
Individual:
- Exhibit confidentiality in relation to students, parents and faculty.
- Develop a positive working relationship with administration, staff, students and parents
- Assume responsibility for personal and professional growth and development by attending meetings, workshops, conferences and continuing education classes as related to Gifted Education
- Remain current on effective teaching practices, techniques and learning strategies, literature, new research findings and technology and data collection
- Adhere to the new PERA law and Senate Bill 7 which describes the Illinois Learning Standards and requirements for good teaching
- Be knowledgeable of the District Safety Plan
Qualifications
Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with an endorsement Gifted Education, minimum of three (3) years successful teaching experience
