Kindergarten Teacher (2026 - 2027 School Year)

Duties

Position Summary

The Kindergarten Teacher is responsible for providing developmentally appropriate, standards-based instruction while supporting the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs of all students. This role focuses on building strong foundational skills in literacy, mathematics, communication, behavior, and classroom independence within a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment. The teacher plays a critical role in establishing positive relationships with students and families and supporting student success through consistent routines, high expectations, and trauma-informed practices.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Embrace and help grow the mission of Pleasant Valley which is to “engage, inspire, and empower each student towards academic excellence and citizenship”.
  • Deliver developmentally appropriate, standards-aligned instruction in core subject areas.
  • Build strong foundational skills in literacy, mathematics, communication, problem-solving, and classroom independence.
  • Provide explicit instruction in foundational reading, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and early writing skills.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 plans, and varying academic levels.
  • Implement accommodations, modifications, and interventions as directed by student plans and support staff.
  • Use student data and assessments to inform instruction, identify learning gaps, and provide targeted interventions.
  • Teach, model, and reinforce classroom routines, procedures, and positive behaviors.
  • Use positive behavior supports, restorative practices, and trauma-informed strategies to support student success and self-regulation.
  • Observe, assess, and evaluate student performance and communicate concerns and progress appropriately.
  • Maintain frequent, proactive communication with families regarding academic progress, behavior, attendance, and student needs.
  • Build and maintain a positive, inclusive, safe, and supportive classroom environment.
  • Collaborate with grade-level teams, special education staff, intervention staff, and administration to support student growth and achievement.
  • Support students’ academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other school settings to ensure student safety.
  • Participate in professional development, school improvement efforts, and district initiatives as applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned by administration.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Skills

  • Must have a valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with an Elementary Education (Grades 1–6) and/or Early Childhood Education (Birth–Grade 2) endorsement. 
  • Must have a positive attitude and positive approach to meeting the needs of all students.
  • Demonstrate understanding of child development and age-appropriate instructional practices.
  • Display fair judgment, time management, and an ability to prioritize.
  • Organized and able to multitask.
  • Demonstrate strong classroom management using consistent expectations, positive behavior supports, and developmentally appropriate strategies.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Demonstrates consistent attendance, reliability, and professionalism.

Salary/Benefits

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Schedule: Determined by years of experience and total semester hours. A teacher can increase their salary by moving down the salary schedule with more experience, by moving horizontally towards the advanced degree columns, or by doing both.

Schedule & Time Off

  • 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday
  • 180 total working days per school year
  • 12 sick days and 3 personal days per school year
