Position Summary
The 2nd Grade Teacher provides standards-based instruction focused on building strong foundational academic, social-emotional, and behavioral skills while fostering a safe, nurturing, and structured classroom environment.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Embrace and help grow the mission of Pleasant Valley which is to “engage, inspire, and empower each student towards academic excellence and citizenship”.
- Build strong foundational skills in literacy, math, problem-solving, and classroom independence.
- Provide explicit instruction in foundational reading, fluency, comprehension, phonics, and writing skills.
- Support students in developing self-regulation, social skills, and age-appropriate independence.
- Demonstrate understanding of child development and age-appropriate instructional practices.
- Deliver standard-aligned instruction in core subject areas to promote student growth and achievement.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 plans, and carrying academic levels.
- Collaborate with special education staff to support student goals.
- Maintain frequent, proactive communication with families regarding academic progress, behavior, and student needs.
- Participate in RTI processes as applicable.
- Support students’ social-emotional development alongside academic growth.
- Observe, assess and evaluate student performance. Identify when intervention may be needed.
- Utilize instructional technology to enhance student learning.
- Develop and enforce classroom rules.
- Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, and during both arrival and dismissal.
- Establish an appropriate, positive, inclusive and safe learning environment.
- Other duties as assigned by administration.

Salary & Benefits
Salary Schedule: Determined by years of experience and total graduate semester hours. A teacher can increase their salary by moving down the salary schedule with more experience, by moving horizontally towards the advanced degree columns, or by doing both.

Schedule & Time Off
- 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday
- 180 total working days per school year
- 12 sick days and 3 personal days per school year
Evaluations
- Evaluation of certified employees shall be governed by Article 24A of the Illinois School Code which establishes that each teacher in contractual continued service is evaluated at least once in the course of every 2 to 3 school years.
