HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELOR

Duties

REPORTS TO

The high school counselor is responsible to the principal/or her/his designee or appropriate grade level administrator.

JOB GOAL

Exercise a high degree of initiative and professional judgment in providing counseling services while working within the established framework of the federal and state regulations and local district policies as outlined by the Principal, Director of Special Education, Central Office Administration, and the Board of Education. To assist the administration of the high school complex in facilitating effective educational services in a communicative and safe climate.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for assisting the principal or her/his designee with

scheduling and student placement when needed

  1. Responsible for conducting conferences with each department chair in regard to student placement in classes for scheduling purposes.
  2. Responsible for class registration of students
  3. Responsible for organizing schedules of students for orientation and registration
  4. Responsible for conducting individual personal counseling with students and parents. Make referrals to other agencies as needed.
  5. Responsible for reporting suspected child abuse to the proper authorities
  6. Responsible for conducting conferences with parents and teachers, parent and child, teacher and child, child with child, administrator with child, administrator with parent, and administrator with teacher, when the need arises and with prior approval of the principal and/or her/his designee

Responsible for attending weekly team meetings, scheduled administrator meetings, and core meetings when needed

Responsible for viewing DIF quarterly report

  1. Responsible for attending workshops/courses for continued professional growth and development

Responsible for the announcement of academic achievement awards for the graduating class at the graduation ceremony

Responsible for assisting in the development of the rules and regulations as outlined in the Student Handbook

  1. Assist in the creation, implementation, and maintenance of the office aide curriculum program
  2. Maintain records, including original protocols and checklists, and write reports, as needed for counseling department
  3. To perform other duties that fall within a school counselor's expertise as assigned by the principal and/or her/his designee
  4. Review transcripts for all incoming students

Qualifications

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

A Master's Degree in Counseling

  1. Type 73 School Service Personnel Certificate - Must be certified as a School Counselor in the State of Illinois

 

DESIRED SKILLS

  1. Knowledge of testing and evaluation
  2. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff
  3. Ability to recognize problem situations and to develop appropriate remedial actions
  4. Knowledge of resources within the school system and the community
