Duties
JOB GOAL: To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each district student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinates school health services, including physical and dental examinations, immunization program, and tests for hearing and vision as required by state law.
- Works with specialists for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.
- Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters.
- Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
- Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness.
- May perform student home visits as needed.
- Participates with school staff in developing and implementing total school health programs for all parties.
- Contacts homes of children referred by principals.
- Advises on modification of the educational program to meet health needs of individual students.
- Prepares and submits reports for the superintendent, county and the State Department of Public Health.
- Authorizes exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases as required by state rules and regulations.
- Advises teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health defects.
- Assists school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in schools.
- Attends committee meetings and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum.
- Participates and provides in-service training programs for district personnel.
- Keeps an inventory and dispenses all medication to students on a daily basis.
- Demonstrates regular and punctual attendance.
- Maintains a professional, positive attitude, and personal demeanor when dealing with the public as a member of the school staff.
REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Superintendent
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions and/or Board policies of the Evaluation Plan agreed upon in accordance with State rules and regulations as prescribed by the Illinois School Code.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Valid Professional Educator License with School Nurse Endorsement.
2. Preferably, two years of experience in public health nursing or in a school district.
3. Demonstrated desire to help all children.
4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Salary/Benefits
