Duties

POSITION GOAL: To provide support that focuses on the academic, social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of students and to prepare students for post-secondary education, employment or training, and independent living.             

 

DUTIES:

  1. Under supervision of licensed teacher, prepares for classroom activities.
  2. Works with small groups of students to reinforce material assigned by the teacher.
  3. Assists individual children who need specific assistance to achieve the objectives of their IEP, the assistance is under the direction of the teacher.
  4. Assists teachers with non-instructional classroom duties.
  5. Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make-up work.
  6. Assists with reading and storytelling.
  7. Assists with the supervision of students during lunch periods, assemblies, play periods, and other activities.
  8. Supervise lunchroom and playground activities as assigned.
  9. Participates in professional development programs.
  10. Work with individual students or small/large groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  11. Help students with instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
  12. Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
  13. Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
  14. Assist with the supervision of students in all school-directed activities assigned.
  15. Assist with small/large group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and story- telling.
  16. Assist students in the library or media center.
  17. Assist in recording student attendance.
  18. Help students with their clothing.
  19. Assist with lunch, snack, and clean-up routines.
  20. Assist with wash-up and toilet routines (which may include diapering).
  21. Serve as a source of information/assistance for substitute teachers.
  22. Assist in the collection of student progress data, including implementing assessments.
  23. Obtain and maintain appropriate certification in crisis intervention as directed by principal, superintendent, or director of student services.
  24. Maintain safe learning environment by enforcing all school and classroom expectations and implementing appropriate crisis intervention strategies (only when trained in crisis intervention techniques).
  25. Maintain the same level of confidentiality of information about students as is expected of certified teachers.
  26. Performs such tasks as may be assigned by the principal and/or director of student services

Qualifications

  1. Valid Illinois State Paraprofessional Certificate.
