Guidance Counselor (Anticipated)

Duties

The job duties for the guidance counseling position include:

Planning and Development

  1. Assisting in the formulation of administrative procedures, policies, and graduation requirements (researching, recommending, cataloging), which directly affect the success of students. Establish and maintain a google drive that is accessible to key school personnel with relevant forms, files, and all programming under the umbrella of the guidance office.
  2. Assisting in the development of school guidance department objectives.
  3. Assisting in the development of freshman orientation, school schedules, student scheduling, graduation planning, dual credit, AP credit, volunteer hour parameters, Assessment (ACT/Pre-ACT/ASVAB), career/college orientated programming/field experiences, and National Honor Society to improve the quality of services provided to students based on assessed needs.
  4. Planning duties in conjunction with administration, staff, social worker and counselor. 

Service to Students

  1. Providing leadership for the mentoring program to include: individual or group counseling for children who are experiencing problems with academic completion, attendance, on-time arrival, discipline, school, home, or community adjustment with an emphasis upon early intervention.
  2. Encouraging and assisting families in their pursuit of community services that may assist in the remediation of school centered problems.
  3. Schedule and deliver Senior seminar (college bound) which prioritizes student portfolios: scholarships, College visits, college preparation, employment.
  4. Providing leadership and counseling to the student employment program, the senior seminar, as to appropriate college and career preparation (College planning Career cruising).
  5. Supervises the referral of students to various out-of-school organizations (IVCC, ACC, GED) as necessary.

Service to Parents

  1. Performs casework service with parents as an integral part of the task of helping students: to increase the parents' understanding, their constructive participation in resolving their child's problems, and their knowledge and use of appropriate resources available.
  2. Assisting parents in preventing problems by facilitating communication with the school.
  3. Assisting parents to understand college/career transitions, including FAFSA orientation/preparation, college applications/tours, and career exploration.
  4. Advocating for students at student meetings, problem solving teams, and school attendance review boards.
  5. Maintains case records and files. Works with administration to help track family case management.

Services to Staff

  1. Providing collaboration and consultation regarding student problems and coordinating plans and actions to meet them. Early identification of problems is emphasized. Consults and collaborates with other school personnel in gathering and giving information on a case, and in establishing and planning for respective roles in the modification of the student's behavior.
  2. Assisting in planning educational prescriptions for students.
  3. Facilitating the involvement of community agencies in efforts directed toward the remediation of student problems in school adjustment.
  4. Helping the school principal identify and resolve student issues, needs and problems.
  5. Providing in-service to school employees related to guidance services.
  6. Updating teachers with tracking of community service hours.
  7. Collaborating with teachers to present school counseling core curriculum lessons.

Services to the Community

  1. Meeting with individual and community groups to explain school programs and student needs.
  2. Assisting community agencies in their understanding of student needs.
  3. Referral as appropriate with local interagency council and or outside service provider.

Professional Development

  1. Attending and participating in educational conferences and workshops pertinent to district initiatives and job function.

Program Evaluation

  1. Maintaining records of all services provided.
  2. Maintaining reports of work with students to include academic, social emotional development, behavior, assessments, grades, attendance reports, graduation plans, and developing, interpreting/maintaining impact reports.
  3. Reports of appropriate local, state, and federal agencies.

Other duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assisting in the screening of counseling services.
  2. Providing supervisory assistance as needed.
  3. Supervising student interns.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

5. Protects privacy and civil rights of all students served and the school.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess a Master’s Degree in school counseling or related field and a valid Illinois license endorsed for school counselor.

Salary/Benefits

Competitive compensation based on education and experience, as negotiated by the collective bargaining agreement plus a percentage differential.

Additional Notes

JOB GOAL: To act as an advocate for students’ well-being and be a valuable resource for their educational advancement. The school counselor will help students with issues such as bullying, dealing with disabilities, low self-esteem, poor academic performance and relationship problems. The counselor refers students to a school psychologist for further treatment if necessary.

In addition, they evaluate students’ abilities, interests and personalities to help them develop academic and career goals. They also administer aptitude tests and show students different paths to success.
