SUPERVISOR: Assistant Superintendent for PreK-5
SUPERVISES: Educational Support Staff, Certificated Teaching Personnel, and Coordinators
JOB SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Assistant Superintendent for PreK-5, the Director of PreK-5 Literacy and Social Studies is responsible for providing leadership and direction in the continuous improvement of the literacy and social studies programs. This role ensures all PreK-5 students receive high-quality, evidence-based literacy instruction and inquiry-driven social studies education that aligns with the Illinois Comprehensive Literacy Plan (2024) and the Illinois Learning Standards. Through partnership with all stakeholder groups, the Director sets direction consistent with the district's mission to support college, career, and life readiness for every learner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Direct the administration and coordination of the district's PreK-5 literacy programs, focusing on explicit and systematic instruction in the Seven Components of Literacy: Oracy, Phonological Awareness, Word Recognition, Fluency, Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Writing.
- Lead the implementation of the Illinois Learning Standards for Social Science, emphasizing the inquiry skills of developing questions, evaluating sources, using evidence, and taking informed action.
- Provide leadership in the development of effective educational programs for all students within the Tier 1 core curriculum and tiered student supports, including interventions for students.
- Using a curriculum review cycle, formulate and lead innovative curricular programs that improve academic outcomes and align with Public Act 103-0402 and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
- Oversee efforts to monitor the operation of instructional programming in all schools for the purpose of evaluating and improving programs using coaching, collaboration, and modeling.
- Systematically lead and support instructional coaches with student-centered coaching cycles with a focus on student outcomes. Support coaches in building their capacity to serve as leaders in curriculum.
- Work in partnership with other stakeholders, including all Directors in Educational Services supporting MTSS, multilingual, student supports, and data and assessment.
- Oversee the planning of professional development designed to meet specific needs, focusing on research-based best practices.
- Support and lead the district's internal review process for school improvement efforts in conjunction with the District Strategic Plan.
- Lead and support building leaders in the work of professional learning communities utilizing data to drive the instructional shifts.
- Provide leadership and oversight for the programming needs of elementary specials courses (e.g., Art, Music, Physical Education, and Library) to ensure a well-rounded and high-quality educational experience for all PreK-5 students.
- Prepare drafts of necessary Board policies and administrative rules and submit the annual budget for the assigned departmental areas.
- Collaborate in efforts to engage stakeholders and enhance partnerships with family and community partners.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent PreK-5 and his/her designee(s).
Salary/Benefits
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- The work year for this position is 12 months.

SALARY RANGE: $118,800-$130,000/YEAR

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:
Work is performed in an environment where unusual temperature, noise, and hazards are relatively nonexistent. Work requires the employee to perform the following critical physical demands of the job:
- Ability to regularly talk, see, hear, walk, stand, sit, and use hands for fine manipulation.
- Ability to occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
- Must have a valid Illinois Driver's License and the ability to travel between buildings as needed
