Behavioral Health Specialist / Educator

Duties

Job Goal: Provide substance use prevention services to students, families and staff across all West40 Continuum of Student Services.

Performance Responsibilities: 

Other essential duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Provide individual and group counseling to a caseload of students in the West40 region affected by substance use.
  2. Conduct assessments and screenings to identify students at risk of substance abuse and provide appropriate interventions.
  3. Understand and consider age specific developmental issues in order to provide appropriate interpretation of assessments and needed interventions.
  4. Effectively provide crisis intervention support services when needed for students and staff.
  5. Develop and execute an education program for substance use to provide students, families, and staff information on prevention and intervention.
  6. Create and monitor appropriate treatment plans for students.
  7. Coordinate an effective network of service providers to ensure a high level of care for students; and serve as a liaison between students and outside referral agencies/support groups.
  8. Serve on committees to address substance issues, safety issues, and program development for students.
  9. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student interactions, progress, and treatment plans using DAP case note format.

Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

The School-Based Behavioral Health Specialist/Educator is responsible for providing counseling and support services to students across the West40 programs facing substance abuse and related issues. They will collaborate with social workers, advocates, administrators, and other school personnel to deliver preventive education, assessments, and intervention techniques to promote healthy behaviors and student well-being. The counselor will also engage with parents/guardians, providing resources and guidance to support the overall success of students struggling with substance abuse. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  1. Ability to work effectively with students, parents, staff, colleagues, school districts and community
  2. Experience with substance abuse counseling; either having CADC (through IAODAPCA or ICRC) or completion of a Master’s degree covering addictions. 
  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, parents/guardians, school staff, and external professionals.
  4. Ability to establish rapport and build positive relationships with students of diverse backgrounds.
  5. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  6. Flexibility to adapt counseling strategies to meet the unique needs of students and their families.
  7. A commitment to ongoing professional development and continuous learning.
  8. Knowledge of substance abuse prevention strategies, treatment modalities, and evidence-based counseling techniques (including but not limited to CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Person-Centered Therapy, etc.).

Education Requirements: Bachelor Degree in Mental Health Counseling, Substance Abuse Counseling, or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.

Salary/Benefits

Twelve-month year. Starting Salary: $65,000.00
