Duties
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Middle School Assistant Principal assists the Principal in providing instructional, behavioral, and operational leadership for the school. The Assistant Principal plays a primary leadership role in student discipline, school safety, and daily operations while supporting instructional improvement and staff supervision. The Assistant Principal ensures a safe, structured, and effective learning environment in alignment with Board of Education policies and District 181 expectations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Student Discipline & School Climate
- Lead the implementation and consistent enforcement of the District and school discipline policies.
- Investigate student conduct concerns and determine appropriate restorative, corrective, or disciplinary responses.
- Maintain accurate discipline records and analyze behavioral data to identify trends and develop interventions.
- Communicate proactively with parents/guardians and teachers regarding student conduct and behavior plans.
- Collaborate with counselors, social workers, and staff to support student social-emotional growth.
- Ensure equitable discipline practices aligned with district values and legal requirements.
- Supervise student arrival, dismissal, lunch periods, passing periods, and extracurricular events.
- Assist in the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans and safety plans.
Operations & School Management
- Coordinate daily building operations to ensure smooth and efficient functioning of the school.
- Oversee student master schedules, supervision schedules, and duty assignments.
- Support coordination of standardized testing logistics.
- Assist in emergency preparedness planning and implementation of safety procedures.
- Require correction of unsafe conditions and report potential hazards.
- Collaborate with Buildings & Grounds regarding maintenance, facility needs, and school operations.
- Assist in coordinating extracurricular events and after-school activities.
- Support inventory and management of materials and equipment.
Instructional & Staff Leadership
- Participate in classroom observations and provide feedback to staff as assigned.
- Support the implementation of the School Improvement Plan.
- Monitor instructional practices and student achievement data.
- Support staff development and in-service initiatives.
- Co-facilitate building-level committees and actively participate in district committees.
- Serve as a resource to teachers regarding instructional practices and classroom management strategies.
- Participate in hiring processes and staff supervision as assigned by the Principal.
Communication & Collaboration
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members.
- Prepare correspondence related to discipline and operations.
- Participate in articulation activities with other district schools.
- Serve on district committees as assigned.
- Attend Board of Education meetings or committee meetings as requested.
- Assist in orientation programs for new students and families.

- Complete other assignments and/or special projects as requested by the Principal or Superintendent.
Qualifications
EDUCATION, CREDENTIALING and/or EXPERIENCE:
Education: Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership
Credentials: Valid Illinois’ Professional Educator License with Principal or General Administrator endorsement
Experience: Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience; Demonstrated leadership in student management and instructional leadership
