Duties

 

  1. Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to secondary pupils.  Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  1. Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  1. Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  1. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  1. Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
  1. Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
  1. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
  1. Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.
  1. Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community.
  1. Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
  1. Communicates with parents and school personnel on pupil progress.
  1. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  1. Cooperates with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.
  1. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
  1. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  1. Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.
  1. Maintains professional competence through inservice education provided by the District, and in self-selected professional growth activities related to music.
  1. Participates cooperatively with the principal or his designee to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with District guidelines.
  1. Other duties that may be assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor in Music Education Degree, minimum.

This position also teaches STEAM.

1. Describe the music educators that most greatly impact your teaching style. (Orff-Schulwerk, Dalcroze, Kodaly, Suzuki, etc.) Provide some examples of how you would incorporate their methods when teaching a 2nd grade general music classroom.
 
2. Describe your ideal balance of vocal music, instrumental music, and rhythmic movement in the elementary music classroom. Do you feel this balance changes as students progress from Kindergarten through 4th grade? Explain your reasoning. 
 
3. Name a few accommodations you could provide for a student with severe physical impairments when teaching an instrument that requires fine motor skills.
