Duties

Position Summary

The Director of Junior High / High School Band will lead a comprehensive instrumental music program that promotes student growth, musicianship, and performance excellence at both the junior high and high school levels. This role includes instruction, rehearsal, and performance preparation for concert ensembles and is designed to engage and inspire students, fostering both individual and group musical achievement.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan, rehearse, and direct junior high and high school band classes and ensembles.
  • Direct concert, marching, and pep band ensembles.
  • Design and implement standards-aligned, engaging lesson plans that develop students’ musical skills and understanding.
  • Prepare students for performances, concerts, festivals, contests, and community events.
  • Select appropriate repertoire for varying ability levels.
  • Establish and maintain effective classroom management and rehearsal routines.
  • Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and support staff.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and the school community to encourage student participation.
  • Manage band inventory, instruments, uniforms, and equipment.
  • Support and participate in extracurricular performances and activities, including evening and weekend commitments.
  • Recruit and encourage student participation in band programs to grow and sustain enrollment.

 

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with an endorsement in Music.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field.
  • Experience directing band at the junior high and/or high school level.
  • Strong knowledge of instrumental pedagogy, rehearsal techniques, and music theory.
  • Ability to work effectively with students of diverse backgrounds and ability levels.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience growing and sustaining a comprehensive band program.
  • Experience coordinating performances, travel, and festivals.
  • Familiarity with music technology and contemporary instructional practices.
