Duties
SUMMARY
The ESL/Bilingual Paraprofessional’s primary function is to facilitate communication among ELL (English Language Learners) students who struggle with speaking, writing, and understanding the English language and their peers, the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school system, and families. The educational interpreter provides interpreting and support services to ELL students that are educated in the school district.
DUTIES
- Discuss assigned duties with ESL teacher and classroom teacher(s) in order to coordinate instructional efforts.
- Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations as needed.
- Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or supervised role-playing methods.
- Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups in order to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
- Teach socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement.
- Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips.
- May work with/handle resistive students.
- Assist students while loading and unloading from the transportation system as needed.
- Distribute teaching materials such as textbooks, workbooks, papers, and pencils to students.
- Distribute tests and homework assignments, and collect them when they are completed.
- Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
- Grade homework and tests, and compute and record results, using answer sheets or electronic marking devices.
- Complete required reports in a timely manner.
- Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
- Assist the classroom teacher in other tasks necessary in maintaining a professional and positive classroom environment.
- Perform other paraprofessional duties as may be assigned by the ESL teacher, building principal, ELL Department Head, or Director of K-12 Professional Development/Curriculum.
ESL/BILINGUAL PARAPROFESSIONAL SPECIFIC DUTIES
- Possess the ability to write, read, and speak legibly and clearly in the requested language and English.
- Assist with communication on paper so that the teacher may devote maximum attention to teaching.
- Provides interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities, and parent meetings when requested in advance.
- At times, when it does not interfere with their service as ESL/Bilingual paraprofessional, may be asked to assist the teacher with some of the more routine classroom duties.
Salary/Benefits
PAY: Step 1 $19.57/hour (May be granted up to three years previous public school experience)

Additional Notes
SCHEDULING
The work hours for this position are from 7:45am-3:30pm. The schedule is subject to change with district demands in compliance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
Evaluation: The Building Principal, in accordance with the Granite City Community Unit School District #9 Board of Education policy, will evaluate the performance of this job annually.
Terms of Employment: Annual contract. Nine-month position. Upon proof of experience, paraprofessionals will be granted and placed accordingly on the salary schedule, up to 3 (three) years of Illinois Public School/out of state Public School experience in the United States. No fractions of years will be counted. Approved School Calendar of 180 Days
