Executive Director for Legislative Affairs (Executive Director #1684)

Duties

Reporting to the policy & communications officer, is responsible for responding to legislative inquiries on education bills and issues; resolves sensitive issues; coordinates written summaries and recommendations on legislation affecting the agency and education; develops and coordinates databases; and, attends hearing and committee meetings.

  • Researches and responds to constituent and legislative inquiries from legislators, liaisons, directors and/or the governor's office staff regarding education bills and issues.
  • Plans and develops a strong state legislative program and effectively coordinates legislative initiatives.
  • Provides written summaries and recommendations of legislative action that may affect education and the agency to the Superintendent or other agency staff.
  • Represents the agency; may attend and document legislative committee meetings during legislative session.
  • Resolves situations of a sensitive nature by researching, analyzing and handling problems that arise and ensures that accurate responses are provided and deadlines met.
  • Develops and coordinates detailed databases.
  • Provides complex management reports including tracking the status of and agency position on pending legislation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or a bachelor's degree plus ten years of relevant professional experience. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)
  • Experience in dealing with constituent inquiries from legislative offices.
  • Experience in working in an electronic bill analysis tracking system.
  • Experience in working with the various legislative support agencies and the governor's office of management & budget.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ability to develop and maintain databases and use software packages.
  • An in-depth understanding of the general assembly and the legislative process.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
