Duties

The District Nurse will provide physical, mental, emotional and social well being of students and staff.  All duties are to be performed in accordance with District and State Board of Education policies and guidelines as well as the Nurse Practice Act.

Responsibilities

  • Provides first aid treatment including emergency care.
  • Assists with vision and hearing screening and other screenings as directed
  • Promotes sound health practices to prevent the spread of communicable diseases such as hand washing, good hygiene and covering coughs/sneezes
  • Reports communicable diseases in school population as directed by the CDC, ISBE and/or KCHD requests
  • Reports suspected child abuse as mandated
  • Carries out technical procedures for students with special health care needs such as glucose monitoring, G-tube feeding, peak flow monitoring, insulin injections, Epi-Pen administration, Glucagon administration, etc
  • Oversees student medication administration in health offices as directed by ISBE guidelines and delegates when appropriate
  • Reports concerns regarding student's medications to district nurse
  • Serve as a member of the District's Wellness Committee
  • Other health care duties as requested by Building Administrator and/or District Nurse

Clerical

  • Prepares State mandated reports, initial phase, regarding physicals and immunizations, vision and hearing screening and submits these to district nurse as requested
  • Assists with collection and maintenance of health records and data specific to health care recipients.  This includes medication maintenance, safety and the FiveRights of Medication Administration
  • Performs clerical duties such as data entry, filing, preparing files, following health protocols and utilizing Skyward
  • Assists with weekly, monthly, and annual reports as directed by school nurse
  • Initiates accident/incident reports as well as student accident insurance form
  • Assists with reports and health records for IEPs

Job Duties

  • Assesses and provides care to children who are ill or injured
  • Greets clients, answers telephone, and maintains log of health care administered
  • Maintains health office traffic flow
  • Inventories health office supplies as needed and reports need of replacements to district nurse
  • Assists in maintaining a user-friendly, safe, clean environment in health office
  • Other duties as directed by building administrators and/or district nurse

Communication

  • Maintains open communication and refers questions appropriately to the School Nurse
  • Maintains communication with staff, students and parents to benefit the health needs of the students
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues
  • Documents phone and other communications

Inservice Training

  • Attends meetings scheduled during the workday as requested as well as attending meetings as needed after school

Qualifications

  • RN (registered nurse - must provide license)
  • Current First Aid (waived if RN/LPN)
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR) Automated External Defibrillator Certification
  • Automated External Defirbrillator (AED) Certification
  • Vision and Hearing Certification
  • Exemplary organizational, interpersonal, clerical, communication and technology skills

Salary/Benefits

For an ISBE Certified School Nurse

For a Non-School Certified Nurse

  • Starting salary is $50,000, but could be negotiable depending on certifications and experience.
