JOB SUMMARY:
The Special Education Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with diverse learning needs. This role requires collaboration with general education teachers, parents, and support staff to create a supportive learning environment that fosters academic, social, and emotional growth for students with disabilities in various educational communities throughout the school setting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To excel in this role, the individual must meet the following key responsibilities:
- Develop and implement IEPs tailored to students' unique needs.
- Conduct assessments to identify needs of students.
- Monitor and assess students' progress towards goals.
- Utilize data to inform instructional decisions. Collaborate with staff in regards to students’ progress in making academic or social emotional progress adapting and modifying goals as necessary Maintain appropriate student records.
- Provide direct instruction to classroom, groups and individual students as needed
- Adapt curriculum and teaching strategies to meet individual needs of students and collaborate with other staff, including paraprofessionals, so that they can implement strategies in the classroom.
- Motivate students through positive feedback and the implementation of other positive behavior supports including behavior intervention strategies when appropriate and necessary.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and concerns.
- Create a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students.
- Supervise students in and out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
- Participate in school events including: student activities, district and school committees.
- Stay current in special education and best practices by attending district in-services and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Perform other duties as required.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Additional tasks as assigned.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: The role requires frequent walking and standing.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment is generally stable, with minimal exposure to unusual temperatures, noise, or hazards. The position requires extended and non-traditional hours to fulfill job duties, as well as participation in organization-sponsored events and meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with:
- Special Education endorsement or
- Learning Behavior Specialist (LBS1) endorsement
LICENSES/CREDENTIAL:
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: All terms of employment are outlined by the collective bargaining agreement with the Steger Education Association.
EVALUATION: The performance of this role is evaluated according to the Board's policy on evaluating professional personnel.
